Body shaming film sets out to shatter stereotypes

Just occasionally, a story hits my inbox that I have to share and this one comes from Australia. The message, however, will be of interest to women everywhere and I'm sure that Taryn Brumfitt's film will be available to view here soon.

See what you think and I would love to hear your thoughts in the comment box below.

"The four-year battle of an Aussie mum to end body shaming is about to take its biggest step forward with the global release of a documentary.

Embrace is the story of South Australian mother Taryn Brumfitt and her fight to empower men and women to feel comfortable with their physical appearance.

An increasing number of people, including children, are exposed to the unrealistic and stereotypical images of the “perfect” body from magazine covers to social media sites every day.

Brumfitt said despite the way media portrayed beauty, she learned that the real problem was not her appearance – it was the psychological battle.

“It’s a financially rewarding place for companies to make people hate their body because it makes us want to run and buy their products,” she said.

“What happened for me was learning to unconditionally love my body. I told myself that my body is not an ornament it’s a vehicle and it will change. That I don’t need to conform to the narrow ideals of society, of how we should conform to this one body type to be happy.”

Brumfitt started making waves when she posted a “before” and “after” photo of herself to Facebook that went viral – catching the interest of high profile celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Rosie O’Donnell.

The photo has now been seen by more then 100 million people worldwide.

Brumfitt decided she wanted the issue of body shaming to gain more exposure and set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a documentary, which reached about AUD $331,000.

“I hated my body after I had my three children and I wanted to change. I thought that cosmetic surgery was the only option to fix what I thought was broken,” she said.

“But I didn’t want my daughter to think that she had to change her body so I decided to train and enter a body building competition to find out what it was like to have the perfect body. But to have the body that I had took too much time, sacrifice and energy. “There isn’t a potion or a lotion or a new diet to make yourself feel good so I then started speaking in halls, community centres and schools to help other women realise that. “This message is needed and I am more than happy to be that person to drive that global change.”

A Dove international study of more than 10,000 females across 13 countries found that women’s confidence in their bodies was on a steady decline.

About 69 per cent of women and 56 per cent of girls said pressure from media and advertising agencies resulted in them feeling anxious about their appearance.

Body shaming has also been a big issue with celebrities.

Jennifer Aniston this week wrote a scathing blog post about the negative attention the media had placed on her figure over the course of her career. Brumfitt said although she had encountered a lot of backlash from “internet trolls” she used the negativity as motivation to help spread the message of love. “It’s empowering to hear someone else go through something similar and it gives hope to people,” she said.

“The mission behind everything I do with the body image movement from Embrace the film to the online stuff we do, it all leads to one thing – global positive change. It’s time to say no to those who would put us down or want to tell us how to look.”

Embrace was a Sydney Film Festival finalist for best Documentary last month and will have its South Australian premiere in Adelaide this Sunday."

3 Cosmetic Dental Treatments You Need To Know About

If you’re not completely satisfied with your smile, you may find that you lack confidence. So instead of being held back by your teeth, why not do something about it?

To get you up to speed on what’s available, here are three cosmetic dental treatments you need to know about.

1. Veneers

Whether your teeth are crooked, discoloured or you have a gap that you’re unhappy with, you could consider getting dental veneers. Veneers are made from layers of porcelain and act as new facings for your teeth.

To ensure the veneers look natural and fit you properly, your teeth are filed back so that the artificial facing can be placed on top. After the treatment, you will be left with a sparkling smile you’ll be proud of.

Since this is quite an in depth procedure to have, it’s important that you choose a trusted dentist that’s located near to you. The good news is, there are a number of private practices you can visit, so whether you’re looking for veneers in Manchester, Birmingham, London or elsewhere, you shouldn’t struggle to find the right one for you.

2. Implants

An alternative option to removable dentures, dental implants are artificial teeth that offer a fixed, permanent way for you to enjoy a full smile.

This treatment is especially useful for those who may have a mouth that can no longer support dentures, and it can be used to replace anything from a single tooth to several teeth.

When dental implants are fitted, metal screws made from titanium are drilled directly into the jaw bone to hold the replacement tooth in place. The implants are tailored to fit your mouth properly, and once it’s done, you should be left with a full set of pearly whites to enjoy.

3. Teeth whitening

It’s no secret that what we put into our mouth can take it’s toll on the colour of our teeth, especially drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine. Smoking can also make your teeth look discoloured and stained.

A stunning, white smile is something a lot of people are desperate to attain. The good news is, teeth whitening can help you achieve just that.

This procedure involves having your teeth bleached to make them appear lighter and it’s a treatment that should always be carried out by a regulated dentist. Teeth whitening is not a one off procedure - your dentist will give you a special bleaching gel and mouthguard to use at home for a specified period of time.

Having your teeth whitened by a dentist may cost more than using an off-the-shelf kit from a pharmacy or supermarket, but it's a much safer approach.

With so many different dental treatments available, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a full, beautiful smile.

Testing Elizabeth Grant Skincare Hydra Cell Active Range

As a 50+ woman I am always on the look out for the Holy Grail of skincare products - in other words those that both offer effective protection against anti-ageing and are within my budget.

I was recently sent three new products from the Elizabeth Grant Skin Care Hydra Cell Active range which are exclusive to Ideal World who recently launched the brand's highly successful Collagen Reinforce range in the UK.

I will be giving these a thorough road test over the next 28 days and these are my initial thoughts about the products.

My 52 year old face!
Whilst the Elizabeth Grant range is new to me, the company is hugely successful in Canada and focuses on producing highly advanced luxury skincare products using the company's exclusive anti-ageing compound called Torricelumn™.

This is a blend of vitamins, proteins, botanicals and anti-oxidants designed to penetrate into the skin to make it firmer, smoother and younger looking.

Torricelumn™ was discovered by Elizabeth Grant in 1948 when she discovered a natural substance that was used to treat war wounds. She had it specially formulated with other ingredients and began applying it to her own damaged skin. Gradually, she found there was a very noticeable transformation and within eight months, she was able to discard the dark glasses and drooping hats that she had been wearing to disguise her skin in public.

Elizabeth went on to become a professional make-up artist to the stars but this anti-ageing compound has now been added to the Hydra Cell Active range whose key ingredients are all designed to bind up to 1000 times their weight in water to give maximum hydration and a plumping effect.

The range contains products for face and body and I was sent:-

Hydra Cell Active Intensive Hydra Treatment Activating Liquid
Hydra Cell Active Day And Night Face Cream
Hydra Cell Active Day And Night Eye Cream

The first thing that strikes you is the packaging which has a very classy 'e' embossed on the lid.  When you open the creams, there is also a silver foil seal over a white plastic protector - three layers to protect the cream inside.

Hydra Cell Active Intensive Hydra Treatment Activating Liquid

Elizabeth Grant Hydra Cell Active Treatment 55ml is an intensely hydrating skin treatment that helps to restore the look of plumpness and volume to the skin. You apply a small amount to your face and neck before moisturizer.

The product contains a combination of Tri-Complex Hyaluronics which helps reduce the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These provide skin with a moisture barrier which helps lock in hydration and delivers moisturisation throughout the day. The liquid also contains Torricelumn™ and tamarind seed extract.

This treatment is designed to help to tighten the look of skin, leaving it feeling lifted and, over time skin is promised to feel more supple and smooth, with a decrease in the look of lines and a reduction in dryness.

The product is 2 phase and you need to add the Sodium Hyaluronate Powder which is contained in a flat lid, then discarding this and replacing this with the stopper-lid and shaking the liquid to mix.

There is no fragrance and the resulting white liquid is quite runny and drops easily.  You really do only need a couple of drops and the product absorbs immediately without leaving any sticky residue.

Hydra Cell Active Day And Night Face Cream

This cream delivers hydration, to tighten and plump the look of skin, and helps to decrease the look of lines. Also formulated with the combination of Tri-Complex Hyaluronics, it helps protects the skin from dryness, delivers moisture, and hydrates the skin throughout the day. I'm particularly interested in this one as it claims to help skin appear plumper, make cheeks looks fuller and also reduce the look of hollows under the eyes.

This product also contains peptide technology to decrease the appearance of deep wrinkles, collagen to help to improve the look of facial contours and firm up the appearance of skin and Edelweiss plant stem cells to help to improve the skin’s overall complexion.

I found the face cream had a pleasant fragrance, was quite light and runny and, again, was very easily absorbed.  I did find it made my skin tingle ever so slightly but this effect was short lived. My skin did feel rehydrated and it kept the two annoying small patches of dry skin around my mouth at bay for a few hours. Not bad for a first application.

Hydra Cell Active Day And Night Eye Cream

This eye cream is designed to reduce the look of ageing around the delicate eye area with this moisturising cream and its formulation complements the other two products.  As well as the combination of Tri-Complex Hyaluronics, it contains Torricelumn™ and marine collagen extract, and Silk Tree bark extract and darutoside from siegesbeckia orientalis help to provide the look of a lifted upper eyelid, reduce the appearance of puffiness, and minimise the look of crow’s feet and dark circles.

The eye cream has a thicker consistency and no fragrance and, again, it was easily absorbed. There was no tingling from the eye cream.

The Hydra Cell Active range is available from Ideal World.TV and all three products are priced £29.95 for the bundle but they are usually priced together at £87.97 so there is a whopping saving of 65%.

Nevertheless, these days we all want the maximum bang for our buck so I will be testing these three products over the next month and reporting back.

On first test, things look promising. I love the formulation of the products and the packaging and despite some initial tingling, my skin quickly settled down and looked refreshed.

You can stay connected with the home of shopping TV, Ideal World, on Sky 654, Freeview 22, Virgin 747, Freesat 812 and online at www.idealworld.tv.

Preparing For Your Daughter's Prom

I'm sure you've seen photos and Facebook statuses of beautifully dressed teenagers attending their prom recently. I know my niece, Georgia, looked gorgeous. If it's your daughter's turn next year, here's how you can help her to prepare for her milestone event now.

As parents we understand that our daughters like to have a say in their life decisions! From the time when she ate her first candy floss, to the time she learned to park the car, the bond between you has only grown stronger over the years. It's great to have those special times when you can grow even closer to your children, and prom time is surely one of those. Your daughter will be nervous, excited and will also want your help to make this moment a special one. You can help her by starting to plan as early as possible to give you both all the time you need to prepare and budget.

Spring next year will herald the arrival of prom time in high school. She will soon enter into the world of 'grown-ups’. She will soon take her first step towards adulthood. So, what should you do to make her at ease? How should you help her? Will she need your assistance or not? Well, the answer is yes for, apart from calming her and giving her confidence that she will look beautiful during her prom, you should also help her to choose the best on-trend dress to suit her figure.

Finding the right dress is crucial as it is an integral part of your daughter’s prom experience and it's something you can do together. Last minute shopping is never advised as your daughter will need plenty of time to select her special gown. Your daughter will love it if you can help her to select from the stylish collection of 2016 prom dresses. Give her advice while she’s checking some dresses; make sure she is confident that the dress fits perfectly too.

You could also check the latest trends and also what the celebrities wore at the red carpet. Ask about your daughter’s preferences and advise her on dresses based on her body type. Don’t forget to ask about their school’s prom dress code, too. Is there a theme? Does she want a royal, a mermaid or a princess look? Select a dress based on her preferred color; maybe she wants to wear her favorite aqua, coral or ivory. Also ask whether she wants to wear a gown, two-piece dress or perhaps a ball gown.

Before you choose any dress, check relevant social media pages and read reviews about prom dress stores. You can check out Prom Dress Shop to view their collection and read tips and reviews when you visit their Facebook page.

Here are other items to keep in your checklist:

• Accessories: Choose accessories that complement with her dress
• Shoes: Should be comfortable and must go well with her dress
• Hairdo: Check whether she will require a professional to do her hairdo
• Nails: Manicure and Pedicure
• Gloves
• Intimates
• Purse
• Boutonniere
• Essential makeup products

Whether you are looking for Sherry Hill or Jovani dresses, you will get all major designer dresses at PromDressshop.com. You will also find all your queries answered in their FAQ’s section.

A prom holds a special place in a family's memories. It is a moment where beauty, anxiety and confidence are felt all at once in your daughter’s life. She should feel flawless, gorgeous and confident after the hard work she has done to make her prom the best time of her life.

Make sure you take care of this moment and cherish it with her. By supporting her and sharing your views from your own experience of approaching womanhood, she will understand that you are as excited as she is for her and her new life.

When You Lose Your Crowning Glory - Hair Loss & Caring For Thinning Hair

Our hair is often referred to as our crowning glory and the condition and style of our hair can really affect our confidence - either for better or worse.

As we approach menopause we find that our hair is no longer as strong and voluminous as it once was.  And our colour starts to fade as those pesky greys appear.

There is a new school of thought that says we should celebrate having grey and white hair and I'm sure you have noticed some of your friends throwing away the hair dye and embracing the grey.

For many of us though, grey is synonymous with 'old age' and we'd do anything to disguise those tell tale signs of maturity.  Not only that, but many of us have to cope with thinning or falling hair.

It's not a problem faced by men alone.

So what causes hair loss?

The most common form of hair loss is determined by our genes and hormones and it is estimated that around 30% of Caucasian women are affected before menopause.

There are three things which speed up the rate of hair shedding - advancing age, an inherited tendency to go bald early (for men), and an over-abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the hair follicle.

Basically changes to the hair's growing cycle means more hairs are shed with the hairs becoming thinner and thinner until they are too fine to survive daily wear and tear.

Other physiological factors might cause hair loss. Recently, a group of Japanese researchers found a link between excessive sebum in the scalp and hair loss. This is because the excessive sebum (oil) which often accompanies thinning hair enlarges the sebaceous glands and leads to malnutrition of the hair root.

Although this condition could be hereditary, they believe diet is a more prominent cause. The researchers note that Japanese hair was thick and healthy, with a small gland and little scalp oil, until more animal fat crept into their diet after World War II.

Hair loss is often increased by stress, dieting, poor circulation, steroid use, mineral deficiency, genetics, pregnancy or moving to a new country or change of environment. These can cause a change in the body’s hormones and effect DHT  – the contributor to hair loss.

Psychological distress can also makes matters worse. The more hair we lose the more we worry about it – and then the more we worry about it, the more hair we lose… It is a vicious cycle!

Caring for thinning hair can also add to your stress.

Most doctors agree that if you have a oily scalp with thinning hair, you should shampoo your hair frequently. This is because shampooing can reduce surface sebum, which contains high levels of testosterone and DHT that may reenter the skin and affect the hair follicle.

You may think that more frequent shampooing is the last thing you should be doing if you are worried about thinning hair or hair loss but there are some effective, yet gentle, shampoos on the market.

I was recently sent a selection of shampoos to try by hair loss specialists The Harley Street Hair Clinic, who are world leaders in FUE hair transplant technology and are the only clinic in the UK to specialise in follicular transfer hair transplant technology.

They are finding that, as more high-profile patients speak candidly about their hair transplants (for example their client Wayne Rooney), more men and women are getting in touch for consultations.

Whilst I am not losing my hair, I have definitely noticed that it is getting much drier and coarser as I get older - and admittedly, colouring my hair is probably not helping!

Swopping to a gentler shampoo has definitely helped.

Phytojoba Intense Hydration Brilliance Shampoo

This one had a lovely coconut smell and left my hair with more volume. It contains Jojoba Oil, which is a genuine liquid wax to smooth and add shine, soothing Cornflower and Mallow and a washing base derived from Coconut Oil to help your hair rapidly regains an optimal level of hydration, shine and suppleness.

Sachajuan’s brilliant blue Ocean Mist Volume Shampoo contains the brand's signature ‘Ocean Silk’ technology – a cocktail of marine algae extracts which works to enhance strand-strength, suppleness and shine.  This mimics the bed-head effect of the spritz, to create texture and body without adding weight. It is suitable for all hair lengths and textures, but especially those with fine hair .

I loved the fragrance of this shampoo which really does remind you of the sea.  I didn't find this one quite so moisturising though.

Korres Shampoo For Thin/Fine Hair with Rice Proteins and Linden

This Korres shampoo is designed to strengthen and add volume to thin / fine hair and contains rice proteins to increase hair elasticity and density while adding natural, lasting volume. The Linden extract forms a protective film on hair surface, improving its sheen and appearance. I loved this one. It definitely left my hair smoother and sleeker.

Kloraine Shampoo With Citrus Pulp

Klorane Citron Pulp Shampoo with vitamins is suitable for all hair types and can be used as frequently as necessary and by the whole family. It has a fresh invigorating fragrance and it neutralises hard water to restore vitality and radiance.

Whilst I loved this one and it's light citrussy scent, I found it a little too strong for me since it is for normal to oily hair.

So there you have it - a selection of great shampoos which will help nurture dry and thinning hair.  You can find out more about hair loss, both male and female on The Harley Street Hair Clinic's website and, if you are worried, a chat with your GP may help to rule out other causes such as an underactive thyroid or vitamin / mineral deficiency.

Is Drinking Our Supplements The Answer To Younger, Fresher Skin?

Now that I have reached the age of 52, I'm on a mission to find ways in which I can stay looking younger for longer - without necessarily going under the surgeon's knife.

I recently wrote about some of the non-surgical treatments available but these will only have a temporary effect if your diet, and your lifestyle in general is not up to scratch.

In our menopausal years we face the double-whammy of hormonal upheaval both mentally and physically. Our skin becomes less firm and begins to sag.  Our hair loses colour and becomes coarser or thinner and our nails become weaker and more brittle.

It's not surprising then that the old adage about a woman having to choose between her face and her figure after a certain age makes sense because we have to decide whether to lose those stubborn middle-age pounds that we can gain or keep them and maintain a relatively plump and unlined face!

A sensible diet with the right balance of protein, carbs and healthy fats plus lots of fruit, veggies and water has been drummed into us all daily.  But if you are still working and raising kids, it's not so easy to spend time in the kitchen pursuing the latest 'clean eating' strategy, substituting digestive biscuits for almonds and covering everything in Chia seeds.

It's not just the cooking either.  It's the organisation needed, the planning, the shopping and, with many of these diets, the cost.

And, much though we would like to pretend we are all nutritionists (unfortunately buying a Nutribullet does not automatically give you that qualification), how do we know we are getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals?

As we get older, the needs of our bodies change and there are a number of supplements which are recommended to help protect against ageing.

You may have heard of some of these, such as Hyaluronic Acid, which plays an important role in skin hydration and stimulates the production of collagen in the skin.  The bad news is that by the time we're in our mid-40s we are producing roughly half the amount of Hyaluronic Acid we need with the consequences of wrinkles and thinning hair.

Then there's Glucosamine which occurs naturally in our body as part of our cartilage and when used as a supplement can treat UV damaged skin and hyper-pigmentation, and Biotin (also known as Vitamin H) which supports the B vitamins in our bodies to correctly metabolise our food so that we can extract the nutrients we need from it.  As a supplement, Biotin helps with hair loss and dry or scaling skin.

I often joke that my favourite liquid supplement is red wine because of the anti-aging effects of the mysterious compound it contains - Resveratrol - which is also found in nuts.  It is a renowned anti-inflammatory agent and an antioxidant that helps repair the damge 'free radicals' do to our skin.

Free radicals are generated by our bodies when we convert food to energy and, broadly speaking, they are toxic compounds which can start a chain reaction causing cells to function poorly or die.

Too much red wine, of course, is horrendously dehydrating and I don't know about you but one large glass tends to be my limit as I find any more and the hangover I get seems far worse than it did in my youth!

Have you got the time to make sure you have the right amount of anti-oxidants each day?
So short of spending an arm and a leg in the supermarket loading up our trolley with berries or at our local natural health store buying a wide range of supplements (don't forget Vitamins C and E or Selenium), is there a way we can quickly top up our supplies of these without the expense of buying multiple bottles of different supplements?

Liquid supplements offer a convenient solution to this problem and there is a wide variety of these available in combinations to suit any number of healthcare issues, particularly for those of us in the 40+ age group. Liquid supplements have the advantage of being quickly absorbed and easy to take.  The last vitamin supplements I bought in tablet form were so big I had difficulty swallowing them!

Are liquid supplements effective?  It certainly seems so.  Some research has suggested that only 3-20% of vitamins and minerals in tablet form are absorbed by the body whereas a whopping 98% of liquid vitamins are absorbed because digestive processing is bypassed and they enter your bloodstream within minutes.

This may well be a more effective approach to anti-ageing skincare than relying on face creams alone, no matter how much sunscreen we diligently apply or whatever the latest miracle serum claims to do.

It all depends on your lifestyle and budget, of course, but an excellent skincare regime supported by skin-enhancing liquid supplements may well reduce the need for more intrusive skincare treatments - and will certainly benefit our overall health, not just our complexions.

You can find out more about liquid supplements here.

When Anti Ageing Products Just Don't Do It - Time For Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatments?

Beauty buffs everywhere are fully aware that the price of premium brand skin products can make your eyes water - not only in terms of the cost but, frequently, in terms of the claims made - few of which seem to be backed up with cast-iron proof in the form of quantifiable data. The survey sample sizes always seem to be ridiculously low, don't they?  For example 90% of 30 women tested said our product made their skin glow!

As a marketer, I understand how market research works of course, but that doesn't stop me wanting MUCH bigger sample sizes to validate some of these claims.

Two women sunbathing on a beach
Too much sun can play havoc with our skin in later life
Once you're over 50 and either approaching menopause or in the middle of its clutches, there comes a time when you look in the mirror and think "you know this cream / serum just isn't making any difference".

The last one I tried "Creme de la Mer" left me decidedly unimpressed.  It's a really heavy, sticky cream that has to be warmed between your fingers before applying.  I have found Astral or Nivea to be just as good for a fraction of the price.

Luckily I smoked only briefly in my twenties and was able to give up more or less instantly because I was so terrified of what it was doing to my body.  I remember reading that for every cigarette you smoke you can knock approximately 5 minutes off your life - or something like that.

And I've never been a big sun worshipper because, being a natural redhead, I found I burned to a crisp very easily and couldn't stand the heat.

I think it's true that you can spot the face of someone who has indulged in too many ciggies and sun sessions because their face tells the tale.  I was horrified to hear on Channel 5's recent programme -  "Tantastic - Fifty Shades of Orange" that over 2000 people die of skin cancer in the UK each year alone.

Heavy smokers tend to sport those nostril to lip vertical liplines which I think are incredibly ageing and that's without the extra depth the habit gives to the wrinkles you develop anyway.

I do currently suffer from very dry skin and have some flaky patches around my mouth but I figure this is down to my age.

My one bad habit is a frequent glass of red wine and, as we know, alcohol can be incredibly dehydrating and bad for your skin.

I could certainly do with a freshening up and if I was brave enough to consider cosmetic surgery I would get my eyes done.

Today, though, there is a range of non-surgical treatments which offer the chance to improve your looks without the risks of surgery, and consequently at a more reasonable cost.

These treatments include:-

Anti-wrinkle injections

This is probably the best known and most popular non-surgical treatment, otherwise known as Botox®. It is a natural purified protein produced by Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause lines to form over time. It works by temporarily reducing the contractions of those muscles that can cause permanent lines to create a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance.

Chemical Skin Peels

Surprisingly, skin peels have been in use for over 60 years for therapeutic skincare and dermatology because they are effective for a wide variety of conditions.

Today's peels, such as the NeoStrata®, are formulated with Alpha-hydroxyacids (AHAs), Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) and Bionic PHAs, which have been clinically proven to improve the visible signs of aging.

A chemical peel can help to reduce the visible signs of aging on more mature skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, discolouration and blemishes to give the skin a fresher, more youthful look.

They can also be of great benefit for younger skins as they help to treat acne.

Two sets of lips - non surgical cosmetic treatments - motherdistracted.co.uk
We all want to keep the plump pout we had in our youth!
Dermal Fillers

Most of us have heard of Juvéderm®, which is a range of hyaluronic acid based, anti-ageing injectable products.

Hyaluronic acid has amazing, long-lasting hydration properties as it can absorb and retain more than 1,000 times its own weight in water. The makers of Juvéderm®, Allergan, have extended the range to include a selection of specialist formulations to suit different needs such as hydrating, filling and smoothing.

The original product, Juvéderm® ULTRA is a non surgical dermal filler used for filling fine lines and smoothing wrinkles, for a soft, natural look. It contains 0.3% Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic to make the injections as gentle as possible.

There is also Juvéderm® Ultra Smile, an injectable, hyaluronic acid  filler which has been specifically formulated for the lips to provide plumpness and volume.  It also works to smooth fine lines and enhance the mouth area as a whole. As the lip area is delicate and sensitive, it is formulated to contain added local anaesthetic which makes the treatment as comfortable as possible.

I think the most important thing when considering non-surgical cosmetic treatments is to find a provider with a good track record and excellent pre- and after-care such as The Hospital Group.

It is important to find a provider with fully qualified professional staff who will ensure the treatments you are considering are right for you and who will take the time to explain the procedure and what will happen during, and afterwards.

For me, non-surgical treatments are certainly something I may consider in the future.  I'm not brave enough to go for full cosmetic surgery and I certainly would not want to risk 'cosmetic surgery tourism' , where saving a few hundred pounds may involve a much higher level of risk than undergoing such procedures in a fully vetted and well maintained cosmetic surgery provider in the UK.

Prices start at around £150 per Botox Syringe® and around £200 per Juvéderm® Syringe.  Your provider will tell you how many syringes you will need.

Just make sure that you are having treatment for you.  Anything that safely boosts your self confidence is worth the investment I think.

Affordable Summer Style From JD Williams

JD Williams is a brand I have come to know through its advertising campaign featuring Lorraine Kelly. Lorraine has become a fabulous ambassador for women in my age group (50+) and I love her positive energy and refusal to be pigeon holed as any kind of frump just because she's the other side of 50.

It's great these days to see a vanguard of sassy older women who are making the Fashion Industry sit up and take notice - I often cite Dame Helen Mirren as one of my favourites but there's also Julianne Moore, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Michelle Obama, Christie Brinkley and Jane Seymour - to name but a few.  In fact I can't remember a time when the sexiness of the over 50 woman was celebrated with so much fervour.

It's even better to see that brands are joining in this positive movement to celebrate those of us who are no longer ingenues but who are in many cases absolute power houses of energy, confidence and knowledge. We are also the ones with the most disposable income so we are certainly worth listening to!

JD Williams is certainly one of these brands and I was recently invited to try one of their maxi dresses (you know me, just can't resist a maxi dress).  I was keen to see if they lived up to their reputation as a brand that has risen from out of the ether to be a major online shopping destination.

I was sent the Waterfall Bead Neck Maxi dress - £50 in a cobalt blue (it also comes in cerise) to try and when I tried it on it reminded me of the good old days of Marks & Spencer when the quality was always there and could be relied on consistently.

The dress, a size 12, was a perfect fit and was lined.  The embellished collar contained beading that was securely sewn on (nothing worse than beading where one or two have come loose and spoil the entire effect) and the length of the dress was just right - skimming the ground without trailing on the floor.

This meant that it could be worn with flat shoes rather than having to find some vertiginous strappy sandals which, these days would mean the Husband having to escort me down the drive in case I take a tumble.

JD Williams has a wide variety of maxi dresses and there are a number of differing brands under its main brand umbrella spanning not only fashion (Simply Be, Joe Browns, Lorraine Kelly) but home & garden (Silentnight, Denby, Yankee Candle) and electricals (Vax, Panasonic, Samsung).

I particularly love this Palm Print Lace-Up Back Column Maxi (£35), available in sizes 10 - 32.

Palm Print Maxi
or how about this one - the Joanna Hope Print Jersey Maxi Dress - £55.

Joanne Hope Print Maxi Dress

I'd also like to try this one from Lorraine's own range - the Lorraine Kelly Floral Scuba Midi Dress - £50.

Lorraine Kelly Floral Scuba Midi Dress
JD Williams offer free next day delivery and a personal account where you can spread the cost of your purchases and at the moment there's 30% off over 200 dresses.  Definitely worth a look.

This is one instance where the advertising promises definitely deliver and I'm really looking forward to their AW16 collection.

*I was gifted the Waterfall Maxi Dress for the purposes of this review.

Three Small Changes That Can Have A Massive Impact On Your Look

Just because you are busy and have a lot to do, doesn't mean that you have to neglect your appearance. Try one, two, or all three of these small changes that can have a huge impact on the look of your face.

Your Eyes

Small changes you can make to around the eye area include coloured contact lenses and getting the right shaped glasses your face.

Cosmetic contact lenses are available in a variety of colours and can make a huge difference to your look. They are not designed to improve your sight, but just to change the colour of your eye. You can go for a more intense version of your natural colour for example green blue or brown. Or you can go for a complete change for example from brown to blue or green.

Whichever look you go for, the remember to alter your eyeshadow and liner to your compliment your new eye colour.

As well as being practical, glasses are very popular fashion item at the moment. Geek chic is trending all across social media. It is vital that you pick the correct shape glasses frame for your face.

For example, square faces should go for a round frame which breaks up the harsh lines and strong jaw. Round faces should go for a more of an oblong frame, giving more definition to the eye area.

If you'd like some more information on the correct time frame for your face shape, see here.

You also need to pick the right colour frame for your face. There are so many different coloured frames on offer, apart from the traditional black and brown. The best way to decide which colour frame to go for is to visit an opticians and try them on.

Your Lips

Getting the right lip colour can make a huge difference to the look of your face. For a start it can make your lips look fuller. The right lipstick can also make your teeth look whiter.

Pink tone lipsticks are particularly good in brightening the teeth as are some pink toned reds. But beware, some orange toned reds can make your teeth look more yellow than they are!

If you are considering changing your lip colour you might want to buy a few to experiment with. Or you could go to your local makeup counter and asked them to perform an analysis on you, to see which ones would suit you the best.

Your Skin

Another small change that will have a massive impact on your face both now and in the future is to have a proper skincare routine.

If you do not take your makeup off each night; it can cause premature aging of the skin. It can also cause spots and blackheads because your pores are getting blocked.

Use a cleanser, toner, and moisturiser or skin oil in the evening. This will help remove all the makeup from your face and allow your face to repair during the night.

In the morning cleanse, tone and use a light moisturiser before you apply your make up. This gives a clean matt, finish, so your foundation will go on well and last for the whole day.

Why More People Are Investing In Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling silver jewellery is by far the shiniest of all the precious metals. A lot of people choose to adorn themselves with sterling silver pieces over any other metals. In fact, both the popularity and value of silver has risen, making way for even more choices among sterling silver designs.

Here are 5 reasons why people choose to invest in silver jewellery.

1. The Value of Sterling Silver

While it is the most brilliant and whitest metal, sterling silver is also more affordable than platinum or gold. Since it is a fraction of the price of gold, finding a stunning piece of silver jewellery for a modest price makes for more variety and allows customers to feel like they have found something sensational for a good price. You can take a look at the collection of silver jewellery here.

2. Durability of Silver Jewellery

Silver is a harder metal that can stand the test of time. It can be filed down effortlessly and polished to repair a surface that has been damaged or simply worn out with normal wear. Rings can be sized quickly and easily, and repair costs in general for this metal are economical.

3. Artistry and Design

The variety of jewellery designs in silver is abundant. This is mostly because new artists can afford to cast a lot more designs in this metal than in platinum or gold. This means that there are more and more new jewellery designers and new concepts on the market. The Silver by Mail silver jewellery collection has some gorgeous new designs.

4. Different Styles in Silver

Sometimes it is tough keeping up with the latest jewellery trends. But since silver jewellery is more affordable, customers are able to update their wardrobes more frequently and mix and match as they please.

5. Interchangeable

Many customers find that silver jewellery is easily interchangeable with platinum and gold items. They can don stunning silver designs with other items from their jewellery box, which means that a variety of designs can be worn together as unique ensembles.

Many people adore sterling silver for its bright lustre. The marketplace has seen resurgence in sterling silver simply because it is less expensive to produce and buy compared to its platinum and gold counterparts.

Customers love the fact that sterling silver pieces are great value and highly durable. They can keep up to date with the latest designs without having to pay a fortune to procure them.

Today, many high-end designers enjoy casting their unique jewellery designs in sterling silver. It’s not uncommon to see beautiful precious gemstones being set in silver, either.

Jewellery lovers are enjoying this concept and being able to afford new pieces from popular designers.

While sterling silver may require a small amount of special care to retain its simmer, that doesn’t bother today’s customers. They have learned how to look after their precious pieces and find that it is well worth the effort to continue enjoying all the advantages that purchasing sterling silver has to offer.

Review: Lose Yourself At Octer.co.uk - An Online Shopping Mall You'll Want To Revisit

I was recently introduced to online retail site Octer.co.uk, a new website which not only allows you to search for your favourite items but let's you select your purchases by store as well as item type.

Octer is a start-up company developing mobile-first, e-commerce technology with the goal of making online shopping simple. As you might expect you can shop using Octer via your mobile or tablet too.

The best way to describe it is as an online shopping mall.

I was given the chance to try the Octer shopping experience by selecting a maxi dress.

You select the category - in this instance "Womens" and you can either search by the item category "Dresses & Skirts", shop by brand or shop by store.

If you select "Dresses & Skirts", you are given a further set of options to select from.  I chose "Maxi Dress" and was taken to a page with loads of fabulous dresses to choose from.

These options give you an incredible amount of choice!

Once you have selected a dress, you simply click straight through to the retailer..

Whilst looking for your maxi dress, Octer will suggest loads of similar styles you might like and allow you to check details such as price, size and availability by a one click link through to the relevant store.

Each item clicked on appears in a separate window and everything is under one 'virtual roof' so that you don't have to have keep going to and fro from other websites.

Technically this will speed up shopping.  In reality I found I could spend hours on Octer!  You don't just get one or two alternative suggestions, you get pages of them which you can sort according to low or high price too.

Not only does Octer offer fashion but it also offers beauty, technology, interiors, gifts and sports products.

So what did I choose?

My lovely Jarlo Yara Green Maxi From Asos.Com
I found this lovely green overlay maxi dress from Jarlo Yara Maxi Dress at ASOS.Com.

Octer is well worth exploring if you fancy a full shopping experience without the stress of a crowded shopping mall on Saturday.  And if you've every tried that with kids in tow, you know exactly how stressful that can be!

Review: Vita Liberata pHenomenal Luxury Tan 2-3 Week Tan Mousse

I recently had the opportunity to test Vita Liberata Luxury Tan 2-3 Week Tan Mousse, courtesy of Fighting Fifty, a website with an engaged audience of women, and increasingly men, approaching and over 50, who are looking for good health, beauty and fitness information and education.

Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse is a luxury self tan product which has ingredients that are organic, odourless, non-toxic and very long lasting.

The product claims to give a natural looking tan which fades evenly and is the World's first completely non-toxic tanning range.  There are no parabens, perfume or alcohol and the product is odourless (no yucky "biscuit" smell).

Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 week Tan Mousse is fast drying and claimed to last 4 times longer than regular tans.  Plus, because it contains organic ingredients, it is kinder to your skin.

I have to admit being a complete duffer at self tan application, having previously flirted with numerous spray-on colours, tanning moisturisers and a couple of the well known brands popular with the celebs.

I was sent the Medium Golden Bronze shade and found Vita Liberata to be incredibly easy to apply.

It's a light, frothy mousse which is quickly absorbed and dries instantly - no annoying staining.

You just apply in light circular motions with a tanning mitt (there's a small one supplied in the box with the produdct), making sure you take extra care around knees, elbows, feet and ankles.

You do need to make sure that you exfoliate thoroughly before application as with all self tan products.

Best of all it gives an instant colour so you can quickly apply some to get rid of the pasty glow from your legs before sprinting out on the school run.

The colour develops over 4-8 hours and fades slowly over days - although you are advised to use just water on your self tan patches when you shower.

You can reapply to darken the colour if you choose (or to prolong the tan).

I found the product gave me a lovely natural looking medium bronze colour without streaking after just one application.  You can see my handywork in the photo.

Vita Liberata retails at £37.50 for 125 ml from the Vita Liberata website (also Boots, Space NK and other pharmacies) which makes it slightly more expensive than that well known brand with the French name but this was so easy to use I am extremely tempted to treat myself.

Locally a spray tan costs around £30 so this compares favourably and I haven't yet summoned up the courage to step into the spray tan booth - not least because the idea of all those chemicals puts me off.

If you're thinking of trying a self tan for the first time or just want a reliable, no fuss and organic product, this one is well worth trying.

*I was sent a small sample of Vita Liberata to try in return for an honest review.

Tips For Looking Stylish In All British Weathers

We all know that the British weather can be slightly unpredictable.  One minute it's lovely and warm and the next minute you're stuck in a downpour.  It makes staying stylish in summer a real challenge.

How do you balance the changing temperatures and the constant risk of rain whilst still looking chic rather than crumpled?

These tips may help.

1. Take a spare pair of shoes, ideally flats or wellies.  It's a good idea to keep these in the boot of your car so you always have them. You can change into your sparkly sandals when you get there to avoid turning up with soaked feet!

2. Wear waterproof mascara and take extra precautions with your makeup by using a waterproof foundation and a longer lasting lipstick. A primer will also help to keep your makeup in place.

3.  You can also protect your hair with an anti-frizz serum or a humidity proofing hairspray. Scarves are always handy to shield your hair from the sun or rain.

4. Have an emergency umbrella. It may not be used but it's better to have one just in case.

4. Always carry a pocket size pack of tissues. The cold or wind can make eyes and noses water.

5. Carry a wrap, cardigan or shrug. I have recently discovered that good quality Cashmere knitwear can be had at prices that won't break the bank.

6.  If you're off to do the school run and pushing a pram or pushchair, you might want to invest in a lightweight coat with a hood.

7. Wear lip balm to protect your lips from the drying effects of the sun and any cold and windy conditions! Don't forget to apply a good hand cream with an SPF either.

8. Wear several layers so you can put them on or take them off as the weather changes.

9.  But don't forget your sunscreen and a good pair of sunglasses that protect your eyes from the sun's glare.  Look for a pair that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.

10.  If you are travelling on the underground or public transport a small portable fan may come in useful and it's always good to have a bottle of water if you have room to carry it.

If all else fails, make sure you've got the latest blockbuster novels loaded on your Kindle or phone so you can lose yourself in a great book and forget that you are more bedraggled than groomed!

Review: It's Time To Make A Stand4socks - Socks That Make A Difference

Father's Day is approaching (Sunday 19 June) and one of the most popular presents to give your dad is some new socks.

Stand4socks Child Health Sock - motherdistracted.co.uk
Like my socks?
Now socks are a bit of a battleground in this house, not least because the Husband and I have very similar sized feet and this makes his sock drawer fair game.  Men's socks are so much more comfy I find.

All the Husband's socks are black with varying patterns.  (He's a man of habit).  He claims, outrageously, that I deliberately mismatch his socks as an act of marital defiance.

The thing is, matching 20 pairs of black socks in a dimly lit room wearing the wrong glasses is likely to create the odd, um,interesting pairing.

Dressing in the morning in the various London hotels he hides in all week means playing what he terms as "sock roulette".

Anyway,  I recently discovered a brand of socks which should solve my sock myopia nicely - and a brand, moreover, that has charity at its heart.

Stand4socks sells unique socks designed by entrepreneur Josh Turner.  Each pair is ethically made and creates a connection between two people in the world, as each sale has a 'buy one, give one' impact.

This means that when you buy a pair of socks, instead of giving a pair of socks or a percentage of the purchase to charity, the company gives a measurable, tangible aid in the form of education, food or medicine.

Not only this, but the company also raises funds and gives away nearly 20% of its revenue, not profit, to the charities they support.

Stand4socks is committed to tackling social causes and supports the United Nations Millennium Development Goals

Each sock design supports and raises awareness of a different cause such as Gender Equality, Measles Vaccinations, Clearing Landmines or the Syrian Refugee Crisis.

The socks have the cause's logo on the ankles and are ethically made in two sizes UK 4-8 and UK 9-12.  They have a high quality finish with a reinforced heel and toe and are made of 80% cotton, 18% polyamide and 2% elastane.

Here are some examples of what buying a pair of Stand4socks can do.

1 pair of Stand4socks can

- plant 20 trees
- vaccinate 6 kids against measles in Bangladesh
- provide 25 days education in Afghanistan
- provide 2 antenatal check ups in Uganda
- clear 2 metres of landmines in Laos
- provide entrepreneurship education in South America
- pay for a child's healthcare in Uganda
- provide 2 weeks education to a Syrian refugee
- provide 24 hours in a safe house for a woman and her family in Ethiopia

The socks are priced differently according to the cause they are linked to.

I was sent a pair of socks designed to raise awareness of Child Health Issues which are priced at £6.99.

Stand4socks Child Health Sock - motherdistracted.co.uk
Time To Stand4socks
This design helps support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, "Good Health" through one pair of socks paying for a child's healthcare in a Ugandan unique children's hospital Stand4socks supports.

More than half of the Ugandan population is under the age of 15, and dying children are turned away for parents without any money. This is why the brand supports (Stand4) Whisper’s Magical Children’s Hospital in Jinja, Uganda.

Isn't that a wonderful idea?

Does it make a tangible difference?  Well, in December 2015 as an example, Stand4socks planted 2500 trees, vaccinated 228 children and provided 252 days of education of Syrian refugees.

Stand4socks December impacts - motherdistracted.co.uk
This is what Stand4socks helped to do in December 2015
This Fathers' Day, if you're buying dad socks why not buy him some which do good as well as keep his feet warm.

And they're so brightly coloured I don't think there's any danger of the Husband having to play sock roulette.

I may even actually buy a few pairs of my own.

You can find more information and select your socks at www.Stand4socks.com.

*I was sent a pair of Stand4socks to review - and they're staying in my sock drawer.
