Q&A with author John W. Mefford:

Q: What do the Ivy Nash Thrillers have to do with the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: The Ivy Nash Thrillers comprise the second sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series. The Alex Troutt Thrillers are the first sub-series. While I'll eventually write a series that connects the major characters and plots from all the sub-series, you don't have to read the AT books prior to the IN books. But I have to say, the AT thrillers are darn good.

Q: So you're saying you don't have to read the Alex Troutt Thrillers before the Ivy Nash Thrillers?

JWM: Nope. While a few of the characters might occasionally overlap between the series, they can be read as stand-alone. And then I'll wrap everything up in a final set of six novels that connects all of the main characters and stories from each sub-series. If you haven't read any of the Alex Troutt thrillers yet, you can try out the first three at a pretty nice discount. Just search for Alex Troutt Box Set.

Q: Can you give some insight into how Ivy Nash might connect to Alex Troutt down the line?

JWM: Sure…and then I'll send over a hit squad. Seriously, I'll be sprinkling in a few clues along the way for those who pay close attention to the details, but it will all come together in that final six novels of the Redemption Thriller Series. And it will be explosive and gut-wrenching at the same time.

Q: How many different sub-series are you planning to have in the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: Right now, I see four sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series, with six novels in each. It's the most challenging and fulfilling creative endeavor I've undertaken. I hope you enjoy the journey.

My Review

Each new Mefford thriller is a roller-coaster ride through crime scene after crime scene as he weaves multi-stranded plots together at breakneck speed.

Ivy's back and this time her latest case involves the systematic dismantling of a family of young boys and their grandpa by kidnapping.  At the same time, Cristina is acting solo and has even gone back to school to pursue her own case, but manages to end up in danger herself.

There's a great cast of nefarious characters, mostly all in disguise so that you never really know who is who nor what their motives are.  One of these is a particularly nasty blogger who is gunning to bring Ivy and her friends down.  She seems to have an inside scoop on exactly what's happening but how is she getting so close to Ivy?

And, whilst trying to find office space for her business ECHO, Ivy ends up in the greatest danger of all, finding herself in the clutches of a master criminal - but is Ivy herself actually a killer?

Mefford's writing is bubbling with energy as usual and the reader finds themselves racing to discover the truth - whilst hoping it won't be too late for Ivy Nash.

Review & Giveaway: What Does Baby Want? A Book On Breastfeeding For Kids

This is a really cute and whimsical board book about breastfeeding.  It has been created for the enjoyment and engagement of babies, toddlers and adults by Japan's top design duo, Tupera Tupera.

What Does Baby Want? Board Book by Tupera Tupera

It's a short but sweet story that features a hungry baby and a breastfeeding mother. The baby won't be soothed by a teddy, ball or even a shiny tambourine and eventually, mum realises that the only thing baby wants is milk.

The design of the book is amusing because when open it resembles two breast-shaped rounds and it provides a handy tool for parents to explain to young ones why their younger sibling might be rather noisy and unwilling to settle down.

Inner pages of What Does Baby Want Board Book by Tupera Tupera

The book is aimed at nursing babies and their older siblings, parents and parents to be and, the authors suggest, every child who has a doll to feed.

As World Breastfeeding Week approaches (1-7 August), this little book is a great conversation starter and, let's be honest, the topic certainly has the potential to polarise opinion among nursing mothers and parents in general.

Baby on the breast - What Does Baby Want? Board Book By Tupera Tupera

I have written before about my own breast-feeding challenges and whilst "What Does Baby Want" would make a lovely gift, I would hesitate to call it an ideal baby shower gift.  Firstly because I'm not a great fan of the American baby shower tradition which seems to have come over here and secondly because I am always wary of making any mother feel that she has to breast feed.

If you would like to make your own mind up, I also have 2 copies to give away.  Entry is via the rafflecopter and the usual terms and conditions apply which you can find on my competitions page. UK entrants only.  The giveaway ends at 11:59 pm on Sunday 30th July.

Back cover of What Does Baby Want Board Book By Tupera Tupera

What Does Baby Want? is published by Phaidon as a shape board book RRP £8.95 22 pages.

All four Tremiato siblings have possible motives, as well as a few peripheral acquaintances, but only one could be the guilty party. As Sadie juggles truffles, tips and turmoil, she’ll need to sort the grapes from the wrath in order to find the identity of the killer.

My Review

If you love Miss Marple and Murder She Wrote, I'm pretty sure you'll love Deborah Garner's slightly eccentric senior sleuth, Sadie Kramer. A Flair For Drama sees chocolate loving boutique owner Sadie, visiting an old school friend, Roxy who is working back stage at a theatre production.

Sadie is a really likeable character whose boutique, Flair in San Francisco is full of unusual and wonderfully colourful and sparkly items. She's a widow but has a constant companion who travels everywhere with her, Coco, the Yorkshire Terrier.

Coco is usually out of sight, however, spending a lot of time secluded in a large tote bag and when she does appear, it really adds to the comedy of the story - particularly when she makes an unexpected theatrical debut.

Sadie ends up solving crime in the middle of the show's run with her faithful doggy companion who seems to be more human than dog.

Despite the fact that the show's leading lady meets an unfortunate end, this is not a blood and guts murder mystery and the book has a gentle charm which makes it easy to read.

There is much 'earwigging', reading of body language and blending in to observe, in the way only older ladies can.  There's not much Sadie's misses, even while munching numerous chocolate croissants and chocolate lava cake - the recipe for which you'll find at the back of the book.

An easy, breezy read ideal for a lazy summer day on the beach.

About the author

Deborah Garner is an accomplished travel writer with a passion for back roads and secret hideaways. Born and raised in California, she studied in France before returning to the U.S. to attend UCLA. My Review

This was my first Ivy Nash thriller and, after Booker and Alex Troutt I wondered if I would be equally impressed by another Mefford detective but he's done it again.  Where John gets his energy for writing from, I have no idea but In Doubt fizzes off the page with characters drawn with his usual realism and a villain (or two) that you really want to see behind bars.

Ivy and her partner, Cristina are younger than his previous main characters and the fact that Ivy is not (yet at any rate) working as part of the police adds interest.  As Ivy works to protect the adorable Emma she is trying to unravel her conflicting feelings for the little girl's billionaire father whilst fighting off a shadowy figure who is out to get her.

Every time you think you have things worked out, Mefford throws another spanner into the works until the story builds to a great conclusion.

The supporting characters such as Stan, Zeke and Pudge are all described so thoroughly that you can visualise them.  As another reviewer has said, you could easily believe you were watching a movie.

This is a thriller in which the reader's perception of each suspect shifts constantly - leaving you very much in doubt - until the very end.

High recommended.

Beck Valley Book Tour: Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI Series) by Carolyn Arnold

New Release....

All that remains are whispers of the past…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the victims, building a profile of this serial killer is proving more challenging than usual. How is the killer picking these victims? Why are their limbs being severed and bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this killer to murder?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

My Review

This is the first Brandon Fisher story I've read and it had me gripped from the very beginning. As the story unfolds the killings get increasingly macabre and horrific and Carolyn Arnold has created a monster of a killer who could easily exist down the road from you.

Set in Savannah in the USA, the FBI team are racing against time to catch a serial killer whose modus operandi seems to hark back to rituals from centuries ago.  A number of young men are vanishing and bits of them are turning up in the most gruesome manner.

The characters are well developed and the relationships between the FBI team develop nicely as they scour the area desperately trying to piece together the clues which Arnold ekes out slowly but surely.

It's clear that Arnold really knows her stuff when it comes to police and FBI procedure and the reader finds themselves joining the team trying to work out what possible motive the killer has - or is it just madness?

I won't spoil the story but the denouement is satisfying and far more complex than I was expecting and, despite the fact that this is part of a series of thrillers, Remnants works equally well as a stand alone story.

Beck Valley Book Review: Into The Air by A. K. Downing

Like everyone else in the world, Mia Bryn lives in the dark. Buried in an underground compound, her life is spent in brief allotments of florescent light and dwindling food supplies. But when a letter arrives, Mia and her father are invited to embark on a journey that no one else has been allowed to take for over a hundred years. They are asked to leave the ground and travel into the air. But the outside world is more surprising and dangerous than Mia could have ever imagined. To survive, she must trust her instincts, learn about a world she knows nothing about, and accept her destiny.

Available to buy from....
Amazon.com   Amazon.co.uk   Barnes and Noble    Kobo   Paperback

“Downing’s Into The Air is that fresh take on the YA post-apocalyptic vision we’ve all been waiting for. Mia Bryn is a wonderful character—one who starts out charmingly mortal but soon becomes the heroine we, and her people, need her to be. Can’t wait for the next Mia chapter!” Bruce McAllister, Author of the Cybils-nominated The Village Sang to the Sea: A Memoir of Magic

“There’s a new star in the Young Adult firmament—A. K. Downing’s series, beginning with Into The Air, is sure to be a reader favorite right up there with The Hunger Games and The 100 trilogy.” Richard Snodgrass , Author of There’s Something in the Back Yard

WHAT IF YOU ENTERED A WORLD YOU DIDN'T KNOW
“Did you ever feel so lost that you didn’t know if the ground was above your head or below your feet?”

My Review

Despite the fact that this is story is written for young adults, I have to say I barely noticed, I was so engrossed with this debut novel.  My resolution this year has been to read a wider range of fiction and I am enjoying the challenge immensely.

Set in a post apocalyptic world where the air has been contaminated and the population forced to survive underground, change is afoot and whilst mutants roam the forests, the government has plans to rebuild and regenerate their world.

The heroine, 17 year old Mia, is feisty, brave and determined to stand up for herself.  Let loose from the compound in which she has been forced to survive with her father Marshal, she finds herself a fugitive on the run from unseen forces, desperate to find him at any cost to her own safety.

Her flight takes her deep into the forest where she rescues a little girl and joins forces with a band of renegade guards who find her more than a challenge.  Are they helping her or just waiting to hand her over to the authorities?

I loved that Mia is a well-drawn, modern female character and although the ending of the novel didn't answer all my questions, I suspect Mia's story may continue in further novels.  As the mother of a 9 year old daughter, I would be perfectly happy for Caitlin to read Mia's story.  There is a hint of romance but it is entirely appropriate to the story and not overdone.

I thought the novel was a refreshing change from many of the more saccharine and traditionally 'female' stories available for young adults. This one is certainly an adventure with a bit more bite.

About the author

A. K. Downing is the author of the young adult, adventure novel Into the Air. She grew up in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania and spent her summers exploring the fields, woods and orchards of her grandparents' farm. She studied graphic design at Kent State University and currently works as a Creative Director. She enjoys history, camping, and walking through fields of tall grass, and feels there is no better way to see the world than from the top of a horse. She currently lives in the woods with her husband, daughter, two cats and five chickens. Into the Air is her first novel.

Beck Valley Book Tour: Scars (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas) by Natasha Brown

NEW RELEASE...

Along the breathtaking and unforgiving coast of Snæland, Ásta’s ancestral farm is plagued with bad luck. The kinless maiden’s turf walls continue to be found damaged, and there aren’t enough farmhands to maintain the property. Claw marks in the dirt revive old memories of the wolf attack that left her scarred, and she begins to fear the whispers are true—that Fenrir, son of Loki and king of the wolves, has come to claim her and her land.

Torin often leaves his uncle’s farm in the southern hills to track and ensnare valuable gyrfalcons. His secret ability to turn into the birds he trains means his falconry skills are unparalleled, earning him precious silver and gold. If the ghosts of his past didn’t haunt him daily, pushing him to numb his senses with drink, Torin might have married by now—as his uncle often reminds him. He knows the time has finally come to find a wife and settle down.

During the Althing, the gathering of the year, Ásta’s ability to maintain her property comes into question while Torin wonders if a woman in jeopardy of losing her farm is really worth the trouble.

My Review

An unusual tale which reminded me a little of Tolkein. Asta and Torin meet and fall in love in a mythical beautiful land which is reminiscent of a Viking country.

The maiden Asta bears the scars of a strange beast which attacked her when she was 16 and, after the death of her father and brother, she has struggled to keep her farm going with the help of a few farmhands.

When she gets into debt, a husband seems to be the answer to her prayers - or is he? Because Torin has a strange secret.

When the beast that attacked young Asta reappears, it is time to take action to rid her of this curse once and for all.

Brown's story pulls you in to her fantasy land which is painstakingly observed, even down to the language her characters speak.

It is a little like reading an adult fairy tale which soothes the reader and draws them into lush green landscapes and a memorable story.

About the author

Natasha was born in Nevada City, California. Being an only child, she resorted to using her imagination while exploring the forest surrounding her home (a nasty habit she hasn’t been able to break). Her natural interest in fantasy ignited when her parents read The Hobbit to her as a youth, and from then on anything seemed possible. Once awarded with a Hershey’s bar ‘the size of a Buick’ in her high school English class for creative writing, her passion and interest in literature has never dimmed.

She now lives in Littleton, Colorado, with her husband, two children, and two dogs.
