Win English Tea Shop's Luxury Organic Tea Collection This National Tea Day (21 April)

This Friday 21 April is National Tea Day - yes a whole day dedicated to my favourite non-alcholic beverage and, in the words of the popular World War II song sung by Jack Buchanan, "Everything Stops For Tea".

Steaming cup of tea in a white china cup on a desk with computer

I mention this because Caitlin has just finished her World War II school project and, of course, Dame Vera Lynn has reached her milestone 100th birthday so all things 1939-1945 are particularly topical in our house at present!

To quote:

"It's a very good English custom
And a stimulant for the brain
When you feel a little weary, a cup'll make you cheery
And it's cheaper than champagne..." [Lyrics Goodhart, Hoffman & Sigler]

And lest you think that I have gone rogue and am being unfaithful to my fellow Welsh countryfolk, as I may have mentioned before, I was born in Rochford, England rather a few years ago now. Hence my perennial emotional conflict whenever Wales play England during the Six Nations.

Did you know though, that over 165 million cups of tea are brewed daily in the UK so it’s no surprise having a cuppa has become a Great British tradition and is proudly celebrated each year on National Tea Day.

Affordable but stylish family cars - Are These In Your Top 4?

When it comes to a runaround for the family, practicality is key but you also want something that’s stylish and affordable. If you’re looking for a new family car this year, then take a gander at the list below and discover your next favourite motor:

Nissan Qashqai – for big families

This hatchback is a popular choice for those looking for a vehicle that offers a little luxury, a lot of legroom and plenty of storage space. Classed as a small SUV, you know that this car is a roomy ride and it even won the What Car? award for Best Small SUV in 2016. It’s great for urban driving, featuring a driving assist display that should direct you to that new dance club or football pitch at the weekend for the kids easily.

It also features a flashy self parking feature, meaning you can forget about trying to focus while the kids squabble in the back as the Qashqai parks itself with ease.

Nissa Qashqai car

The RRP for this car is around £18,000, so relatively pricey, but there are some great leasing deals available out there, so you can rent monthly and still enjoy a fantastic new family vehicle without the huge initial payout.

Vauxhall Astra – for style and comfort

For a good looking ride around town that’s also great for those drivers looking for slightly better fuel economy, check out the Astra. However, the turbo model is ideal for those who take longer drives while still maintaining excellent fuel economy – 65.7mpg and lower CO2 emissions which means no road tax.

The boot offers 370 litres of space, a reasonable size but slightly smaller than the popular Volkswagen Golf, however still ideal for packing in the kids' footy kits for the weekend or suitcases for a family holiday. This car also features a self-parking feature, making it a great vehicle for those families living in the city.

Vauxhall Astra

The RRP for this car is around £15,000, but again well priced leasing deals are available.

Hyundai i30 hatchback – for long road trips
This comfortable family vehicle is modest when it comes to features but still stylish and ideal for the family who simply need something to get around town. Boot space is its most redeeming feature, with 395 litres to enjoy and if the back seats are folded down you enjoy a whopping 1,301 litres of space. Driving and handling is reasonably good, with soft suspension that ensures a comfortable ride.

Hyundai i30 hatchback car

Suggested RRP is around £15,000 for a 1.4 litre engine – buying straight from Hyundai may see you pay up to £17,000. Opt for a finance deal and pay this price monthly, to break down the costs and to get your hands on a stylish vehicle the whole family can enjoy - whether you lease or opt for a hire purchase.

Renault Megane hatchback – for the uber stylish

Renault didn’t hire Thierry Henry for their car commercials for nothing! This latest model is sleek, stylish and a little on the sporty side. Available in 1.2 litre engines to 1.6, it’s great for busy families looking for a swish car for weekend runarounds.

The interior feels luxurious, so perhaps this is a model preferable for those with older kids who can appreciate it, but Mum and Dad can enjoy a sat-nav system featuring Tom Tom technology as well as an impressive cabin with a touchscreen dashboard.

When it comes to fuel, it’s pretty efficient with an offering of 76.4mpg and no road tax to pay if the vehicle is registered before April 2017.

Renault Megane Car

Expect to find this car with an RRP of £17,250 for the basic model and smallest engine, a good price for an efficient and stylish car for the family that should last.

Beck Valley Book Tour: Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI Series) by Carolyn Arnold

New Release....

All that remains are whispers of the past…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the victims, building a profile of this serial killer is proving more challenging than usual. How is the killer picking these victims? Why are their limbs being severed and bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this killer to murder?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

My Review

This is the first Brandon Fisher story I've read and it had me gripped from the very beginning. As the story unfolds the killings get increasingly macabre and horrific and Carolyn Arnold has created a monster of a killer who could easily exist down the road from you.

Set in Savannah in the USA, the FBI team are racing against time to catch a serial killer whose modus operandi seems to hark back to rituals from centuries ago.  A number of young men are vanishing and bits of them are turning up in the most gruesome manner.

The characters are well developed and the relationships between the FBI team develop nicely as they scour the area desperately trying to piece together the clues which Arnold ekes out slowly but surely.

It's clear that Arnold really knows her stuff when it comes to police and FBI procedure and the reader finds themselves joining the team trying to work out what possible motive the killer has - or is it just madness?

I won't spoil the story but the denouement is satisfying and far more complex than I was expecting and, despite the fact that this is part of a series of thrillers, Remnants works equally well as a stand alone story.

Why Building And Construction Toys Are So Beneficial For Kids

Building and construction play sets or kits have always been regarded both by parents and by child development experts alike to be one of the most beneficial types of toys especially when talking about development and growth among children.

In case you’re wondering, here are the common benefits of building toys for kids.

Enhances visual motor coordination and spatial intelligence.

Playing with building blocks require children to have a fair understanding of the position of a block or brick relative to the other parts in a particular space. This helps develop and refine their spatial intelligence.

This is important in enhancing their ability to coordinate their motor movements with the sensory inputs from their eyes. This simply means that when children look at a brick, they will have an idea of its shape and how it should be placed in the board in relation to other building pieces.

Refines the development of fine motor skills.

There are building blocks that are smaller than usual and this requires an excellent control of fine motor movement. This is especially true when snapping these blocks into their respective slots so kids need to have precision movement of their fingers.

Caitlin & Ieuan building Lego

Develops math skills.

From the number of blocks needed to complete a particular model to the different geometric shapes that will be formed, kids can learn a lot about the basics of mathematics every time they play with building toys. They also get to appreciate the concepts of area, equivalents, sizes, and even sorting which are all very important ideas in mathematical processes.

Stimulates creative thinking.

Most building play sets have a guide on how to build a particular model. However, this doesn’t mean that the playset cannot be modified to produce an entirely different model. Kids learn soon enough that by manipulating certain blocks, they can essentially create something totally different. And this lays the groundwork for the enhancement of children’s creative and imaginative potentials.

Fosters divergent problem solving.

Closely related to creative thinking is the development of divergent problem thinking. Here, kids begin asking questions as to what other models or structures can be built using the same building and construction blocks that are available to them.

They begin to ask questions that start with “what if” and are often rewarded with fantastic creations. For instance, the model may actually be designed as a house, but using the power of what-if thinking, kids might as well turn it into a ship or something else.

Problem solving is a very important skill that children must be able to learn and master as it lays the foundation for successful problem solving in adulthood.

Introduces and reinforces science and engineering concepts.

There are many scientific principles that can be learned by kids just by playing with construction toys alone. They can learn to experiment, the effects of gravity, how to achieve balance, and the establishment of cause and effect relationships.

All of these will result in the formation and development of a more scientific approach to problem solving. In such cases, engineering concepts will be a lot easier to teach.

Sooner than you can expect, your child might as well be on his or her way to building some of the best innovations known to man.

The Lego 75153 Star Wars AT-ST Walker Set

Allows for dramatic play.

These construction models are not completed for display purposes only. Kids use them to narrate or tell a story. In many instances, they will be telling you about how such models will change the way we live. These become important tools for them to play out the scenarios they have formed in their heads.

Building toys are important tools for children to grow and develop optimally. Getting them one or two of these types of toys can do a lot for their future.

Problem Page Edition15 2017

This week - whether taller is better and what to do when your husband's 'friend' is getting a little too close for comfort.

couple holding hands looking out of a skyscraper window over a brightly lit city

If you would like any advice, feel free to treat me as your agony aunt. Just message me or pop a comment in the comment box at the end of this post. I promise to be gentle.

Here are this week's questions.

Q: Is it better to break up or continue the relationship with only one of us trying to keep the relationship alive?

I have been in a relationship for over 4 years now. Since the past 4 months it's been a long distance relationship and its become very hard to cope up since she shows no interest at all. I don't know whether I should end it or continue it till she realizes her fault?

A: If she shows no interest then it sounds, sadly, as if the relationship is over.

You sound very angry about it but I would suggest that it is not ‘her fault’. Sometimes we need to see the writing on the wall and accept that it’s over and then move on.

Have you actually asked her if she is still interested?

I think you need a frank conversation with her now - rather than wasting any more time in the hope that she will ‘realise it’s her fault’ and beg forgiveness.

To be frank, it doesn’t look as if she’s going to after 4 months.

I think, hard though it is, you need to find out what is really going on and be prepared to end things.

If she has moved to start a new job though, it may be entirely natural that she is preoccupied with setting up her new home, job etc.

Just make sure you are not unreasonably demanding attention she might not be able to give until she has got herself sorted.

Q: Is it possible to sleep with your ex three years after breaking up and have no feelings?

A: In theory yes but why would you? Surely in that instance they are no longer your ex.

Are you suggesting sleeping with them to ‘test’ your feelings? That would be madness.

It sounds as if you have not moved on from the relationship which, after 3 years, is not ideal.

Far better to concentrate on a new relationship and one where there is no game playing, ‘feeling testing’ or hankering over something that has long since ended.

Q: Is a 6′7′′ guy always more attractive than a 6′2′′ guy?

A: What has height got to do with how attractive you are?

Some women like very tall men, some women like tall men and some women, frankly, just don’t care.

Why not concentrate on developing a great personality, a kind disposition and a good soul? Far more likely to win the girls than an extra 5″ in height.

Q: Are there any young girls who like older men?

A: Forgive me but that’s a slightly creepy question and I think you need to qualify exactly what you mean by young and ‘older’.

Assuming you are talking about girls over the age of sexual consent in your particular country, then yes, there obviously are but if you are talking about older men deliberately targeting younger women for their age then I’d gently suggest there might be one or two other things you should be thinking about.

Q: What does it mean if you ask your husband to stop interacting with someone who is attracted to him and he defends her and their friendship?

A:It would be tempting to say that he feels guilty and needs to defend both her and his actions.

I have to say I suspect a lot of women would sympathise with your situation and if it were my husband I would not be happy at all.

I suppose it depends how much time he spends with her and the nature of their communication - for example if she is always sending him flirty texts or Facebook messages or ringing him at inappropriate hours.

I think you have every right to say whilst you are married to me I don’t expect you to be encouraging the attentions of other women.

Friendship is one thing but if it’s clear she fancies him then he is playing with fire and I suspect his reaction is precisely because he knows it.

You are in a difficult situation and need to decide what your ideal outcome is. I do think you need to tell him in no uncertain terms that he needs to think about whether this friendship is more important than his marriage.

But equally, you need to be prepared if the answer to that question is yes.

Don’t put up with being played for a fool though. If your gut instinct is telling you something’s up then confronting it now is better than waiting and being miserable.

How would you have responded to these questions? I'd love to know. You can find more advice on my problem page

Reasons Why Your Brand Needs To Work With A Blogger

It seems bloggers are everywhere and in every niche.  Their influence grows daily across all market sectors and social media platforms.

keyboard and glasses

As marketing budgets dwindle and marketing directors are demanding measurable results, you might be wondering why you would deviate from the tried and tested promotional routes.

There are four very simple reasons why bloggers are an important part of your marketing mix.

*  We can talk direct to your customers and consumers and ask them direct questions which you may not be able to. This may be even more effective than running an expensive focus group.

*  Not only can we promote, but we can influence the creation of new products and services (sometimes even markets) by adopting yours or by using these in ways your product development team hadn't thought of

* We can push your product / service out there quicker than the more traditional methods of print advertising.  Ask us to review and promote and it can be turned around quickly - sometimes even in 24/48 hours.

* We offer incredible value for money when compared with other forms of promotion.

Make no mistake.  Bloggers are no longer the home-spun, frustrated creatives looking to make a little pocket money.  Many of us consider ourselves professionals and our blog is our job.

Mine certainly is after over 20 years experience as a senior marketer, and latterly marketing director of a large Welsh law firm before I took a career break to have my children.

I am fully conversant with all aspects of marketing and PR so I see things from both sides of the fence, so to speak.

There are, however, things you need to consider when working with a blogger.

The issue of blogger disclosure

Collaboration (aka sponsored posts) is a funny thing.  The rules about disclosure are a little vague in the UK, far vaguer than those set out by the Federal Trade Commission governing disclosure in the US.  Here there is guidance not only from Google but from the Advertising Standards Authority.

The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising practice broadly reflects legislation in many instances. The ASA is not funded by the British government, but by a levy on the advertising industry.

Basically bloggers must make it clear to their readers that they have been paid to promote or endorse an item so that the reader can decide whether what they are reading is truly objective. Most bloggers wouldn't dream of misleading their audience, however, because what would be the point? A loss in credibility would be extremely damaging to their reputation.

Follow links vs nofollow links

There is constant discussion about follow and no-follow links in the various blogger forums.

Google does NOT like paid for follow links because it considers, reasonably, that paid promotion gives a product or service an unfair advantage by sending extra 'link juice ' (viewing figures) that a rival might not be able to afford.

Some bloggers will accept follow links and some won't touch them with a barge pole, figuring that link insertion is for SEO purposes and that has little to do with the creativity of their writing.

Others reason that a 'proper' collaboration will be no-follow links because any brand / PR worth their salt will recognise that Google may apply a penalty not only to the blogger but to the brand itself if caught out.

What do bloggers do?

There's also a lack of understanding about what bloggers actually DO when they put a post together.

For example there is

- content creation (researching, editing, proof-reading)
- time spent testing, (reviewing, cooking, crafting, reading etc)
- photography (scouting locations, shooting, editing, often in different formats depending on the social media platform)
- social media promotion across multiple platforms, (commenting, responding to comments)

When you look at it like that you can see why lots of the old 'bung a few quid at a blogger for a quick post' approaches are starting to fall distinctly out of favour as bloggers recognise their worth and charge accordingly.

What you are also paying for, alongside the blogger's expertise, is access to their audience who may be far more engaged than those seeing your product flash by on a billboard on their daily commute, or flickering in the sidebar of their hotmail account.

Any good marketer knows that building brand awareness takes consistent investment, effort and monitoring, and working with bloggers can give you an extra, and a distinct advantage.

The problem brands and PRs face is that, as things currently stand, it is very difficult to compare bloggers on a like for like basis.  This means that metrics such as Moz's Domain Authority or Majestic's Trust Flow are relied upon to give a sense of the blog's quality.  These are, however, a moveable feast and fluctuate regularly.

These metrics, along with stats from Google Analytics which shows unique monthly visitors (how many individuals visit a blog each month) and page views, build a picture of how successful a blog is.

Then there are independent ranking systems such as that run by Tots100 which ranks parenting blogs, lifestyle blogs and travel blogs.

The various ranking systems have their own algorithms and so you can't really compare these on a like for like basis.

And of course, they generally rely on the blogger having added themselves to the list. There may be a gem of a blogger out there who hasn't registered with any ranking system.

Lastly there is the size of the blogger's social media following and their email lists. My social media following is around 22,000 across all platforms and I work hard to keep each audience engaged and with appropriate content for that platform.  You would need to pick the blogger with the right number of followers on the social media platforms most important to your business.

So how much do bloggers charge?

This will depend on the metrics mentioned above and, in particular, their viewing / user figures. Blogging is a community based activity so you can be sure that everyone tends to know who charges what.  That said, there is no hard and fast charging scale.

My charges currently start at around the £100 mark for a basic sponsored post for copy that is submitted to me and my prices rise depending on whether I am writing the copy myself and the amount of additional work and promotion I am expected to do.  You may, however, find bloggers at the top end of their niche easily charging much more than this because of the size of audience they can command.

The 'Free' Guest Post

Often, less scrupulous agencies will try to get a blogger to post a 'guest post' for free on the promise of exposure for them on their brand or client's website.

That 'guest post' of course will include a follow link or two and bloggers are wise to this method of trying to secure a free advertisement on their blog.  A good blogger may occasionally accept a guest post if the content is of particular relevance to their blog or they want content with a fresh eye and a different viewpoint but if your initial approach to a blogger is to try to 'wangle a free guest post', then you may well receive short shrift.

Budgeting for bloggers

Often PRs seem to be given a fixed amount which they then split up to get a certain number of bloggers per promotion - e.g. £600 gets you 10 bloggers at £60.

This seems to be a very random way of doing it.  You would surely get far better value by picking two bloggers with engaged audiences in your sector for £300 each who you know would do a great job than randomly assigning small bits of budget to bloggers whose output may be of varying quality.

And wouldn't it be better to build a long term relationship with those bloggers so that there is two way dialogue between not only you and the blogger, but their audience as well?

Despite the fact that there have been bloggers for years, the industry (if that is the right word) is very much in its infancy with everyone feeling their way to see what works and what doesn't.

This is why collaboration should be a long term thing not just a one-off for a particular campaign, the results of which may not even be measured.

If you are considering working with bloggers then they should form part of your longer term tactical marketing plan - and their input often sits closer to advertising than it does to PR.

Budgeting for blogger input as part of your advertising strategy may be a far more practical approach than trying to shoehorn it into your PR consultancy fees whilst trying to keep the cost as low as possible.

Working with great bloggers should be considered as an investment, not just another line on the marketing expenditure spreadsheet.

Reasons To Choose A Family Staycation This Summer

If you haven’t yet booked your summer holidays as you can’t decide whether to hop on a flight or get in the car, these key reasons why you should stay in the UK with the family just might sway you.

Foot of a baby playing on a beach

Get more for your money

One of the most topical reasons to stay in the UK is the cost benefit. There’s been much debate about whether UK holidays are in fact cheaper than going abroad but if you factor in the current exchange rates and the fact you don’t need to pay for flights, then more expensive accommodation is generally outweighed.

There’s even more opportunity to save money by going self-catering in the UK. You also don’t need to renew your passports or get one for the kids. An adult passport costs £72.50 and child passports cost £46, or more if you need it in a hurry, which all adds up.
Young girl jumping into a loch

The beauty of the UK

It’s easy to forget just how beautiful and historically-rich the UK is, when all we see is where we live and the main roads to nearby cities. From ancient castles and country houses to stunning steam railway journeys, breathtaking walks and some of the best beaches in the world, our fine country has a lot going for it.

Walking around any of our national parks is a treat, but some of my favourites are The Lake District and my former home grounds of Dartmoor and Exmoor. And as for our beaches, there are so many that rival those abroad, even if we don’t have the guaranteed sunshine. Try the North Norfolk coast for seal spotting, Cornwall for coves and surfing opportunities, the caves, stacks and rock-pools of Yorkshire, the vast stretches of sand in Devon and the craggy beauty of the Gower peninsula.

A craggy coastline

Do lots or do nothing

One of the best things about holidaying in the UK is there’s less pressure to make the most of every second, as you can always come back for a long weekend some other time. This means that you can head out to some of the local family attractions or just walk around the countryside. A day in your pyjamas doing puzzles and playing board games isn’t out of the question, either!

If you get a rainy day and you don’t fancy spending it in the holiday home, somewhere like the Warner Bros Studio Tour is a fab option that Harry Potter fans of all ages will love. There’s plenty of indoor Hogwarts action, like visiting The Great Hall, Diagon Alley and Platform 9 ¾ sets, plus learning how the films were made and getting pictures of you flying a broomstick in the green screen.

Convenience
Lastly and by no means least in terms of having a stress-free break, UK holidays mean far less travelling, no time differences or language barriers and fewer uncertainties. As for travelling, you don’t even have to staycation for a week to make the most of it as you won’t be travelling for a day each way.

Other convenience factors are that you know the culture, you’re probably familiar with the area you’re going to and you’re certainly familiar with the food. While part of the charm of going abroad is trying all the different flavours, you really can’t argue with fish and chips and clotted cream ice cream by the harbour (teaching the kids how to fend off seagulls is a rite of passage). Plus afternoon teas, pub lunches and all the take-aways we like.

Are you going abroad or staying in the UK this year? And have I missed any of your deciding factors off the list of why to staycation? Let me know below.

Only 10% of Women Motivated To Lose Weight To Cut Their Risk of Bowel Cancer

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and according to new statistics UK women are not considering their cancer risk when it comes to their weight.  In fact, only 1 in 10 UK women would be motivated to lose weight to reduce their chances of getting the disease.

In line with new 2017 NHS Digital statistics, 58% of women in the UK are currently overweight or obese, and 27% of women are currently inactive (doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week). Maintaining a healthy weight is essential not just for overall health but also to help prevent cancer development. Despite this the latest research points to the vast majority of women in the UK not being motivated to lose weight to cut their risk of cancer.

The new research conducted independently on behalf of BMI Healthcare as part of its April Be Bowel Cancer Aware campaign reveals that 42% of UK women would feel embarrassed to tell someone if they had irregular bowel habits or blood in their stool, the two key warning signs of the cancer. The new figures raise the concern that women are putting themselves at increased risk of late diagnosis because they are too embarrassed to tell anyone about their bowel habits.

More than a quarter (27%) of women have or may have had bowel cancer related symptoms. Yet of these, 40% of women did not discuss their bowel cancer related symptoms with anyone – this includes just talking to a partner, friend or a family member.

Obesity and a high body mass index (BMI) ratio are strongly associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer. Additional body fat is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and World Cancer Research Fund as a cause of bowel cancers. An estimated 13% of bowel cancers in the UK are linked to being overweight or obese. Bowel cancer risk is 46% higher in people with the largest waist circumference, compared to those with the smallest. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise is essential to lowering your risk of the 2nd biggest cancer killer.

Bowel cancer can affect both men and women of any age. It is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, and the 2nd biggest cancer killer, with someone dying of bowel cancer every 30 minutes in the UK. Over half of bowel cancer cases are diagnosed late, but an early diagnosis is crucial. To improve the number of early diagnoses, we all need to be aware of the symptoms, the national screening programme, and be confident in speaking about changes in our bowel habits.

The common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer include: a persistent change in bowel habits, especially going more often or looser stools; bleeding from the back passage (rectum) or blood in your stool; a lump that your doctor can feel in your back passage or abdomen (more commonly on the right side); a feeling of needing to strain in your back passage (as if you need to pass a bowel motion), even after opening your bowels; unexplained weight-loss or tiredness; pain in your abdomen or back passage; or a lower than normal level of red blood cells (anaemia).

The 2017 study was carried out in March 2017 and assessed 1,039 men and women in the UK, to gain the public's insights into the symptoms and risk factors of bowel cancer.

BMI Healthcare is working with the charity Beating Bowel Cancer, to help raise bowel cancer awareness throughout the UK. Our specialist team of Gastroenterologists, Colorectal Surgeons and Specialist Oncologists have put together a guide with everything you need to know to help you become more bowel cancer aware - to view and download our free Be Bowel Aware guide, video and infographics, please visit: https://www.bmihealthcare.co.uk/be-bowel-cancer-aware

Here's some expert advice from Mr Lee Dvorkin, Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon at BMI Healthcare.

What is bowel cancer?

“Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a cancer situated anywhere in the large bowel (the colon or rectum). Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK and the second most common cause of cancer death with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed each year1. Bowel cancer is most common in the over 60's and is rare in people younger than 40 years old. The majority of cases develop from pre-cancerous polyps (tiny growths in the bowel), which if left untreated can, over years, develop into cancer.”

Who is most at risk of bowel cancer?

“The biggest single risk factor is age. More than 8 out of 10 bowel cancers are diagnosed in people aged 60 or over. So the risk increases as you get older. Other factors thought to increase the risk include smoking, obesity and eating excessive red meat, alcohol, animal fat and sugar. A reduced risk has been noted in those who exercise and eat more fibre and pulses. There are some other medical conditions that increase the risk of bowel cancer and these include; Ulcerative colitis, Crohns Disease and having lots of polyps (which are more common as you get older).”

If there is a family history of bowel cancer, should extra precaution be taken?

“Bowel cancer is very common so having a relative with bowel cancer is not unusual. The chance of getting bowel cancer goes up only if the family history is very strong. A strong family history means having several relatives with bowel cancer, especially if they are particularly young.

“Examples of a strong family history might be; having a first degree relative diagnosed before the age of 45 or having two first degree relatives diagnosed at any age. To have a strong family history, the affected relatives must all come from the same side of the family.

“If you have a strong family history of bowel cancer you may need to be referred to a genetics service. You will need to see a bowel specialist for regular colonoscopies to pick up any signs of cancer as early as possible.”

How is bowel cancer detected?

“Usually patients develop symptoms and go to see their GP. The GP will do a rectal examination and some blood tests and then send the patient to see a specialist in the hospital. The two most common investigations to diagnose bowel cancer is a colonoscopy (a camera examination of the large bowel) and a CT colonogram (instead of having the camera put inside your bowel, the doctor looks at x ray pictures of the bowel).

“Some patients without symptoms are diagnosed through the NHS. The Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is offered to everyone aged 60 to 69 years old (75 years in some areas). Every 2 years patients are asked to send a poo sample to the laboratory. If blood is detected in the poo a colonoscopy is offered to see if there are early signs of cancer.”

What treatments are available?

“The treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is when it is diagnosed. The mainstay of treatment for confirmed bowel cancer is an operation to remove the cancer and its surrounding lymph glands. The bowel ends are usually joined back together but sometimes a colostomy bag is required. Nowadays, these operations are performed by keyhole surgery and patients typically spend less than a week in hospital.

“Often, surgery is all the treatment that is needed but If the cancer is advanced chemotherapy is offered and this can last for 6 months. Surgery can also be used to remove certain cancers that have spread to the liver or lungs but this is not always possible.

“For cancer in the rectum, radiotherapy is often used to shrink down the tumour before surgery.”

10 Tips To Spring Clean Your Workspace

As spring turns to summer and the temperature starts to rise, it can uncomfortable working indoors. Now is a good time to make the most of your workspace by getting it prepared for the warmer weather. You really don't want to be rooting through endless paperwork to find vital statistics when you're close to a meltdown!

Workspace with desk and lamp

Here are some simple steps you can take which will make you more organised and a little healthier too!

1.  Clear out old paperwork and shred confidential documents.

But don't forget that some documents need to be kept for tax purposes.  HMRC says that records must be kept for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline of the relevant tax year and they may also check your records to make sure you are paying the right amount of tax.  I like to keep a hard copy print out of my records to be on the safe side.

2. Invest in some new files.

Even though many documents can be stored on your Google drive or in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets on your desktop, you may still need to keep hard copy documentation of items such as invoices and statements (see 1. above!).

You may as well have pretty files that you enjoy using - or at least ones strong enough to withstand regular use.

3.  Improve the air quality

Believe it or not there are actually house plants it is almost impossible to kill.  I have to confess my track record isn't exactly impressive but you can improve your indoor air quality with them.

Plants absorb some of the particulates from the air at the same time that they take in carbon dioxide which is then turned into oxygen through photosynthesis.

You could try Spider Plants, Weeping Fig or Peace Lilies to name a few.

If you tastes are more esoteric, you could try a Himalayan Salt lamp which will also cleanse and deodorize the air.

And of course a decent desk fan will work wonders in the heat.

4. Invest in some VELUX blinds to block out the sun

Not only will decent blinds help keep you cool, but removing the glare of sunlight from your workstation will stop you squinting at the screen and getting a headache.

Giving your windows a thorough clean both inside and out will help too.

In addition, you can get an anti-glare screen for your computer which will help make reading easier.

5. Keep hydrated

Make sure you have a good supply of fresh water to hand and if you are fuelled by coffee perhaps invest in a one cup coffee maker.  Try to incorporate water-rich foods into your snacks and lunches - salad, fruits and vegetables.

6.  Disinfect!

Thoroughly disinfect your keyboard and your phones which can harbour more germs and bacteria than the average toilet seat!

7.  Use Visual Aids

If you are a visual person, why not include a noticeboard for planning or a whiteboard for scribbling down your flashes of inspiration.

Some like to have their vision board in front of them - a wishlist of their hopes, dreams, ambitions and goals. The theory is that by having these things in front of you, you are more likely to manifest them in real life.

8. Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Make sure you have an adequate sized bin.  We have 2, the second being for recyclable material (all the Amazon packaging!) and don't forget you can recycle the shredded paper from your shredder too (great as bedding for mice and hamsters!).

Gradually the aim should be to move to a completely paperless office but most of us aren't quite there yet.

9.  Protect your health

You could also think about wrist and ankle supports if you are going to be spending a lot of time typing to avoid conditions such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).

Most importantly, make sure you get regular screen breaks to rest your eyes and get up and walk about every 45 minutes or so.

My physio says he would not dream of sitting down for longer than this at a stretch if he could possibly help it.

Many doctors consider sitting to be the new smoking and recently leading doctor Sir Muir Gray caused controversy by claiming that Type 2 Diabetes is caused simply by lack of exercise

10. Spring clean your work bag

It's also worth carrying a mini-kit of essentials with you to help stay cool and fresh throughout the day.

Make sure your workspace meets your needs and is a pleasant place to work.  After all you will be spending the bulk of your time there and, for most of us, far longer than we spend with our families unless you are lucky enough to work from home.

Some employers frown upon personal items such as family photos so you may have to restrict your self expression to funky stationery and a cactus that reminds you of your boss!

How Can You Improve Your Child's Education?

Education is one of the most important aspects of any child’s life, and it is also something which a great many parent worry over for many years. In all likelihood, you are keen to ensure that your children’s education is the best it possibly can be, because you know how important it is for their later life that this is the case. But it is one thing wanting it, and quite another knowing how to make it happen.

Let's look at some of the things that you might want to think about if you are keen on improving your child’s education on the whole. Knowing these should help to keep them in the right kind of attitude while improving their learning.

Choosing The Right School

One of the most important things of all is ensuring that your child is actually attending the right school in the first place. The quality and the nature of the school has a huge and direct impact on your child’s education, and it is worth remembering that if you want to improve their education as much as possible.

You will need to decide whether you want them to go to a state school or one of the private schools on educators.co.uk, by way of example. But beyond knowing what kind of schooling to give them, you also need to look at your options in your local area in particular too. Go for something that you know has a strong track record; this will ensure that your child gets the best possible education.

Getting Involved In School Life

Something that makes a huge difference is if you as the parent show a great deal of interest in your child’s school life from the start. The more separation there is between home and school, the more likely it is that they will not work quite as hard or get quite the right benefits, so make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep involved in the school.

This could mean being particularly active and becoming part of the PTA, for example, or you might just decide that you want to help them with their homework.

If you do the latter, however, be sure not to actually do the work for them, but rather help them reach the answer by themselves. This is much more beneficial in the long run.

Home Education

Some parents decide on a home education either in lieu of normal education or in addition to it. Both of these options do have a surprising number of benefits, and you might find that your child is keen on it too. However, you will need to bear in mind the possible drawbacks. For example, your child’s social life might not be quite as full if you educate them solely at home. But you could make up for that by taking them out to local events and so on, so it isn’t the end of the world. Whatever you decide on, be sure that your child is happy with it themselves.
