Win Krombacher Beer - Beer With A Great German Heritage

Now that summer is here and barbecue season is upon us (weather permitting), we've been trying some new beers from Krombacher.

Krombacher Pils being poured into a tall glass

Krombacher is a beer with an impressive heritage. 60 glasses of Krombacher are drunk every second in Germany and it has been produced by the biggest family owned and operated brewery in Europe since 1803.

55 master brewers are involved in its production and the beers have 100% natural ingredients including the finest two row summer barley, Siegel hops from Hallertau and a specially cultivated yeast.

Krombacher beers are made with the local Felsquellwasser® found in 48 wells within 3 km of the brewery and the range includes the Pils, Hell, Dark, Weizen, Radler, Low Alcoholic Pils and low alcohol Weizen.

We tried three beers from the range - the Pils, the Dark and the Weizen (wheat beer).

Selection of Krombacher beers

The Pils is light and refreshing with a delicate taste whilst the Weizen has a delicate wheat flavour with no cloying after-taste. It's one of the most subtle wheat beers I've tried.

My favourite is the Dark, smooth, sweet, malty and almost dark chocolatey and we added it to a spicy beef curry for an extra kick.

Here's Mat's recipe.

Spicy Beef Curry with Krombacher Dark

Ingredients:

500g minced beef
1/2 pint beef stock 1/2 pint
1/2 pint Krombacher Dark Beer
1 tablespoon medium curry powder (or more if you want a hotter curry)
1 tin chopped tomatoes
1 chopped onion
1 teaspoon of salt

Method

Fry the minced beef till brown
Drain the fat from the meat and remove from the pan
Chop and fry the onion
Add the beef, chopped tomatoes, beef stock and beer
Cover and simmer for approx 40 minutes until the liquid has reduced to form a rich sauce

Mat kept everything simple with this dish so it would be suitable for a family tea but you could obviously ramp up the taste with more spice - or more beer.

The Krombacher Dark added an extra depth to the curry with a slight hint of treacly sweetness.

Or, if you've a sweet tooth, what not try a Krombacher Tiramisu?  The dark sweetness of the beer is a great substitute for the coffee or liqueurs in this recipe.

Tiramisu (adapted from www.prima.co.uk)

Ingredients:

About 15 sponge fingers
300 ml (1/2 pint) Krombacher Dark Beer
600 ml (1 pint) double cream
250g (9oz) mascarpone
5 tbsp good quality chocolate shavings (I love Green & Blacks)
2 tbsp icing sugar

Method:

Lay the sponge fingers in a flat 1 litre serving dish and pour over 200 ml Krombacher Dark Beer. Leave them to soak.

In a separate dish, whip half the cream, half the mascarpone, 4 tbsp chocolate and 1 tbsp icing sugar until the mixture forms soft peaks.

In another bowl, whip the remaining cream, mascarpone, beer and icing sugar to soft peaks.

Remove the sponge fingers from the dish.  Spoon the chocolate cream mixture into the dish then layer the sponge fingers on top, followed by the remaining Dark Beer / Cream mix.

Dust with the remaining chocolate to serve.

Lest you're wondering which beer goes best with what, here's a brief food matching guide to allow you to explore Krombacher Beer fully!  There's a great giveaway too, at the end of this post.

Krombacher Pils

Krombacher’s Pils is light and golden, with a thin ribbon of sweetness running through a crisp, dry body which crackles with peppery spice and bitterness. It’s a great beer for barbecues and goes best with juicy burgers and steaks.

Pilsner is a very versatile beer which goes as well with Thai and other Asian foods as it does with subtle dishes such as shellfish.  Whilst it's great with burgers and perfect with pizza, it can also be an interesting accompaniment to light desserts.

It also works well with a cheese sarnie, or how about a combination of mature Cheddar with apple and a good British ham or a baked Brie with cranberries and Walnuts?

Krombacher Hell

This is another golden lager but with fewer bitter and spicy hop notes.  A delicate beer, this one goes well with lighter foods from the grill such as vegetable kebabs or chicken.

Krombacher Dark

The prominent treacly sweetness of this beer makes it an ideal complement to desserts such as grilled bananas and chocolate, but it also works well with meats slathered with sweet, sticky coatings, such as spare ribs with BBQ sauce.

Krombacher Weizen

The best complement for this one's crisp tangy notes is the great British banger (or the Bavarian weisswurst - if you're close to a well stocked Deli). The banana and clover aroma of this particular beer works well with pork.

Wheat beers also work well with Mexican Food such as cheesy quesadillas, spicy sweetcorn and chunky guacamole, or brunch dishes such as eggs Benedict, ham and cheese omelettes, sausages, gammon or ham, perhaps with a sweet or spicy glaze.

We used the Krombacher Dark for our curry but if you want something lighter, you can match your wheat beer with a chicken curry or even a vegetable curry.

Krombacher is available via Majestic www.majestic.co.ukwww.beersofeurope.co.uk, and www.noblegreenwines.co.uk and it's highly praised non and low alcohol range is available from www.drydrinker.com.

If you would like to try a tasting box of Krombacher beers comprising 2 Pils, 2 Dark and 2 non alcoholic beers, then enter my giveaway via the Rafflecopter below in the usual manner.

Terms and conditions apply which you can view on my competitions page.  UK entrants only and you must be over 18 years of age to enter.

The giveaway ends at 11:59 pm on Sunday 2nd July.

Good luck and let's keep our fingers crossed for a 'barbecue summer' at last!

Cook With Gin At Home This World Gin Day

Saturday 10th June is World Gin Day and, as much as I love red wine, even I have succumbed to the lure of the Hendricks and the refreshing hit of ice cold tonic. (Other gins are available!)

Time was, you had a choice of one or two gins at your local. These days it's the norm to find an ever lengthening row of gin bottles with all sorts of quirky names.

It's fair to say that gin has long since lost its nickname of 'mother's ruin', although it does seem to be a standard reference in many a mummy blog.

Gin is a spirit which gets its predominant flavour from Juniper berries and was apparently used as a kind of herbal medicine in the past. But whilst it is a staple of many a tonic based drink and a cocktail, how many of us have tried cooking with it?

Steve Smith, Head Chef at the Michelin starred Bohemia Bar & Restaurant in the heart of Jersey insists it’s time we lay off the G&T’s and instead bring the spirit to the boil with some gin-centric dishes inspired by the restaurant's new summer menu.

Here are Steve's suggestions which you can adapt and try at home.

Gin + Fresh Water Fish

The flavor of gin marries perfectly with fresh water fish, in particular salmon. When preparing, ensure the gin marinates into the fish by chilling in the fridge for at least 45 minutes before cooking. We serve our gin and salmon dish with cucumber and horseradish at Bohemia, which complements the fish perfectly.

Gin + Vegetables

While many serve their G+T’s with cucumber, sprigs of asparagus also serve as a tasty garnish. Why not turn this into a delectable dish and serve gin infused asparagus alongside a summer salad? Add ginger syrup and lemon juice for an extra zing.

Gin + Shellfish

Gin and oysters are the ultimate extravagant flavour combination, guaranteed to impress even the most refined of diners. Simple pour gin and tonic over oysters, then season with lemon zest and a pinch of salt. The restaurant will be serving their own gin and oyster dish this summer, which will arrive to the table in the form of ice-cream!

Gin + Desserts

The options are endless when it comes to pleasing the sweet-toothed. Try a gin and tonic tart, gin and tonic cupcake or even a refreshing gin and tonic sorbet for summer. Furthermore, almost any dessert can be topped with an adults-only gin and tonic syrup made by combining caster sugar, tonic water and lemon juice in a saucepan over a low heat and adding a splash of gin and juniper berries.

Gin and Matcha

Fear not health enthusiasts - superfoods are not out of bounds. Gin and matcha is a great food marriage and you can make a simple gin and matcha cocktail at home, with a tablespoon of Sweet Matcha Powder, lime juice, London Dry Gin and ice.

Will you be giving any of these a try?

Win English Tea Shop's Luxury Organic Tea Collection This National Tea Day (21 April)

This Friday 21 April is National Tea Day - yes a whole day dedicated to my favourite non-alcholic beverage and, in the words of the popular World War II song sung by Jack Buchanan, "Everything Stops For Tea".

Steaming cup of tea in a white china cup on a desk with computer

I mention this because Caitlin has just finished her World War II school project and, of course, Dame Vera Lynn has reached her milestone 100th birthday so all things 1939-1945 are particularly topical in our house at present!

To quote:

"It's a very good English custom
And a stimulant for the brain
When you feel a little weary, a cup'll make you cheery
And it's cheaper than champagne..." [Lyrics Goodhart, Hoffman & Sigler]

And lest you think that I have gone rogue and am being unfaithful to my fellow Welsh countryfolk, as I may have mentioned before, I was born in Rochford, England rather a few years ago now. Hence my perennial emotional conflict whenever Wales play England during the Six Nations.

Did you know though, that over 165 million cups of tea are brewed daily in the UK so it’s no surprise having a cuppa has become a Great British tradition and is proudly celebrated each year on National Tea Day.

English Tea Shop Luxury Organic Tea Collection
English Tea Shop are giving away 50 of these beaut-teas on National Tea Day 21st April

So I was delighted to be sent the most beautiful selection of luxury organic teas from English Tea Shop in their Luxury Organic Collection to help me celebrate National Tea Day in style.

All English Tea Shop teas are created using time honoured healthy ingredients. The range includes nature’s most revitalising herbs, spices, fruits and flowers for the most beneficial infusions and naturally cleansing teas.

I loved the Organic & Fairtrade Earl Grey which had just the right delicate blend without being overpowering and the refreshing Organic & Fairtrade Peppermint - great when you've um, overindulged slightly!

Whizzing Up Something Nutritious For The House of Fraser Smoothie Challenge

The House of Fraser is on a mission to get us all fitter for summer and enjoying the benefits of a healthy smoothie - one you make yourself, not a shop-bought one packed with sugar and other unhealthy things.

They threw down the gauntlet to the Hobbis Household and sent us a Kenwood Smoothie To Go Blender to create a House of Fraser themed smoothie.

Now as you know I am a complete whizz in the kitchen and resisting the urge to do something creative with strawberries and banana, my eye fell on my latest cookery tome "Eat Well For Less" from the BBC TV series of the same name.

How is this relevant you cry?  Well, if you want to get maximum value for your budget in all departments, House of Fraser is a very good place to look.  Their focus has always been on accessible quality for families.

Our Kenwood Smoothie To Go Blender is a real workhorse of a gadget.  It is sturdily built and everything assembles easily with just one click. It can grind spices and quickly create smoothies, soups and sauces with its 350W motor which has 2 blending speeds and a pulse function.

It comes with a 1 litre plastic goblet, a separate mill for spices, herbs, nuts and coffee beans and a smoothie to go goblet ideal for fresh smoothies on the go. The plastic parts are dishwasher safe and the blender comes with a 1 year guarantee.  It currently retails at £39.99.

We chose to make Gregg and Chris's Breakfast Smoothie.

Ingredients

500 ml semi-skimmed milk
2 tbsp mixed frozen fruit (just choose your favourite)
2 tbsp blanched almonds
2 tbsp rolled oats
1 tsp runny honey

Combine ingredients in the blending goblet and whizz until smooth.

Makes enough for 2 smoothies.

The Smoothie To Go Goblet comfortably took the full amount of smoothie and fits nicely in the fridge so you could just prepare the night before and grab it on your way out of the door in the morning.

House of Fraser have a wide range of blenders and kitchen gadgets to choose from but I'm sticking with my Kenwood.  Simple to use, easy to clean and even I can work out how to put it together!

Now to create my stawberry and banana special....

Win A 3 Month Subscription To Le Petit Ballon - Fine Wines Without The Fuss

Le Petit Ballon is a unique wine subscription service where, every month, you receive two bottles of fine wine selected by renowned Master Sommelier Jean-Michel Deluc.

The June 2016 Apprentice Subscription Box Selection

Monsieur Deluc certainly has some impressive credentials - from being head sommelier at the Ritz in 1984 to being recognised as one of the best tasters in the world after participating in Starwine in the US, a wine competition that brings together the top 60 tasters in the world.

The Petit Ballon team put together wines from the winemakers they meet at fairs and expos and from wineries who have sent them samples and this tasting panel, presided over by Jean-Michel decide on the monthly wines which subscribers receive.

There are two levels of subscription - Apprentice (£24.90 per month for two bottles inc. delivery) and Master (£39.90 per month for two bottles inc. delivery).  The Master subscription contains slightly more prestigious labels whilst the Apprentice subscription aims to introduce wine lovers to great value wines from vineyards you would never otherwise have discovered.

In addition to your monthly two bottles, you receive the Gazette, a mini magazine which includes all sorts of interesting information about your subscription and tasting notes for your two bottles.

The Gazette contains all sorts of interesting information
We were sent the Apprentice subscription box for June to try.  It contained one red (Le Grand Verdus 2012) and one white (Domaine de Pouilly Clos de la Condemine 2014), together with probably the best tasting notes I've ever seen.

Not only do these include Jean-Michel's views on the wine but there are full tasting notes and recommendations for the food and wine pairings that will work best.  You are advised how long you can lay the wines down for, which temperature the wine should best be served at and the wines are categorised further as to whether they are fruit, spicy or woody for example.

There are many ways to categorise your wines!
So far we have tried the red, Le Grand Verdus and found the tasting notes to be spot on, describing the wine as being supple on the palate and having a nose which is grapey, pleasant and fresh.

What makes Le Petit Ballon different is that the service punctures lots of the pomposity surrounding wine tasting whilst introducing you to the facts you really need to know to help you to make better choices with your wine purchases.

We have been members of a rival wine club for years and find that the Le Petit Ballon's subscription prices are very reasonable, as is the price of extra bottles if you want to buy your favourites.  There is a decent discounted price on each bottle (20%) for subscribers but anyone can buy Le Petit Ballon's wines to try.

You can buy a Le Petit Ballon subscription as a gift and it's ideal for those who want to learn about wine or, with the Master subscription, a great way to introduce wine connoisseurs to new wines and help them to build their own wine cellar.

You can also customise your monthly wines by choosing them in advance on the website so, for example, if you prefer red wine, that's no problem.

Boxes are sent out between the 15th and 20th of each month, just in time to perk you up from any mid month slump.

A Le Petit Ballon subscription is ideal for those of us for whom a date night is a rare occurence - particularly when you think that one large glass of wine tends to start around the £6 mark and rises steadily depending on the restaurant you choose and your location.

And I don't need to say that it would be an ideal gift for some of us mums who need a tipple at the end of a fraught day. (And without sounding like your mum, you will mind your units and drink responsibly, won't you?).

Le Petit Ballon are very kindly offering a 3 month Apprentice subscription to one lucky winner.  Entry is via the Rafflecopter.  UK entrants only and you must be over 18.  Terms and conditions apply. The giveaway ends at 11:59 pm on Saturday 16th July.

Good luck!

Whizz Up Mel's Speedy Recipe For Broccoli & Cauliflower Cheese

Hi, I am Mel!

I blog about my love of food, travel, fashion, and much more over at The Diary Of A Jewellery Lover Blog.

Today I'm guest posting on the lovely Linda's blog with my family friendly recipe for broccoli and cauliflower cheese.

What I love about this recipe is that it is virtually foolproof and most kids seem to love it. So often I find recipes for cauliflower cheese do not add enough cheese - well not in this case! The breadcrumbs also add a lovely crunch.

If you use an electric whisk, the white sauce will be lovely and smooth with no lumps. This will also keep for a couple of days in the fridge prior to cooking, so perfect to make in advance and pop in the oven when you come home at night.

Broccoli & Cauliflower Cheese

Ingredients

1 small cauliflower and 1 broccoli head, cut into florets
500 ml milk
4 tbsp flour
50 g butter or low fat spread
200 g mature cheddar, grated
4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
black pepper to taste

Serves 4

Method

Heat oven to 200C / Gas 7.
Boil the cauliflower and broccoli for 5 mins.
Drain in a colander.
Make the cheese sauce by the all in one method - put the milk, flour, and butter or low fat spread in a saucepan.
Use an electric or manual whisk and whisk until it comes to the boil and goes thick but smooth.
Stir in grated cheese.
Add the cheese sauce to the cauliflower and broccoli.
Pour into a large dish or 4 individual dishes
Scatter over breadcrumbs.

Cook for 20/25 mins until bubbling and golden

Serve as an accompaniment to your favourite dishes.

Enjoy!

Pairing Food & Wine For Valentines Day

Some wines and foods are a match made in heaven whilst others just never get on.  But do you know which ones?

If you are going to the trouble of preparing a special meal for the object of your affections, why not up the wow factor by choosing a great wine to accompany the food?

The wine buffs at independent wine specialists Roberson Wine have prepared this handy infographic which gives great suggestions to help you impress your Valentine.

At a push, most of us know that white wines go well with fish and chicken, whilst heavier reds are best paired with beef, game and more substantial dishes.

But what about curries, or dessert, or chocolate (yes really)!

The Husband and I tend to stick to red wine and our favourites include the Malbec and Pinot Noir grape varieties, as well as a full bodied Rioja.

You can find more information on Roberson's handy blog - www.robersonwine.com/blog/, including their take on the new drinking guidelines.

My own view?  Drink responsibly with an eye on your health but enjoy the best quality wine you can.

Giveaway: £45 Off Your First FoodZube Online Shop At Tesco

There are loads of food sites which offer meal plans.  There are also lots of supermarkets who deliver.

What if there were a site that helps you to combine your meal planning with your shopping in one location and suggests suitable recipes into the bargain?

FoodZube is a very clever site that allows you to plan your meals according to your taste, budget and the time you have available.  (I'm guessing limited if you're a parent).

FoodZube helps you to organise your favourite recipes in one place, create meal plans and do your weekly shopping in one go, either on your PC or your mobile.

If you would like to try the service, FoodZube offers a free one month trial which doesn't require a credit card sign-up.

Once you have filled in your basic personal information, you will be asked about your preferences - the food you like, dietary requirements (e.g. gluten-free), any nutritional limits (for example protein or carb limits), the time you have and the number you are cooking for,

There is also an option to choose low budget recipes and a very handy 'up to 30 minutes' flag for when there's little time to cook.

You then have the option to add your own recipes, together with the date you intend to cook them so that you create a meal planner.

You can also import recipes from other websites to keep them in one handy location.

Or simply click on "Instant Organizer" which gives you a great list of recipes to choose from based on the requirements you have input on the preferences page.

For someone like me whose repertoire tends to revolve around a combination of pizza, spaghetti bolognese and fish fingers, this is a fabulous tool.

I actually find thinking what to have for tea more stressful than having to cook it.

Once you are happy with the recipes suggested, simply click on "Weekly Shopping" and FoodZube will create a shopping list for you.

It's easy to edit the ingredients you would like and you can also add other non food items to complete your weekly shop in one go.

Click "Buy Online" and you'll be asked to confirm which recipe ingredients you would like FoodZube to add to your shopping list.

Then, very cleverly, FoodZube does your shopping by filling your virtual basket for you to sort through, adding and removing items as necessary.

Currently the supermarket used is Tesco but I imagine there will be a wider choice in the near future.

From this point, all you have to do is check out in the usual way and wait for your shopping to be delivered.

You'll find you've saved quite a bit of time on your shop because you don't have to look for all the ingredients - and you might even save some money since I find when I'm searching it's very easy to add one or two extra treats to the virtual trolley!

You can even start your own food blog on FoodZube's site and connect with other FoodZube bloggers.  This is a service I have never seen offered by any other food-based website.

There are over 50 specialised designs from which to choose and dozens of recipe templates to give your blog a professional edge.

The FoodZube team will even set up your blog's Pinterest account and help you launch it!

FoodZube is free for the first month and costs £7.99 per month thereafter, which I think is incredibly good value.

And I have a fabulous giveaway of £45 off your first FoodZube shop at Tesco.com.

Please note that the winner must sign up to FoodZube in order to receive the prize.  This is free and you can cancel after one month.  No credit card details are required to sign up with FoodZube. The prize will be delivered from Tesco.com which will require an online account with them. Again, there is no charge to do this.

There is no cash prize. The winner will be required to send an email with their home address to FoodZube who will sort out their delivery for them.

Entrants must be over 18 and able to receive deliveries from Tesco.com.

Entry is via the Rafflecopter.  Terms and conditions apply.  UK entrants only.  The giveaway ends at 11:59 pm on Saturday 30th January 2016.

Review: December Degustabox - A Box Full of Foodie Treats

As you might remember from my last post, Degustabox is a monthly subscription food box service with each box containing between 9 and 14 products from well known and / or up-and-coming brands.

It's a fun way to discover new brands and to try food and drink products you may not otherwise discover or add to your supermarket trolley.  We all tend to buy the same things week in, week out, don't we?

So what was in the December box?

Contents of January Degustabox - Food Subscription Boxes - motherdistracted.co.uk
The contents of the January Degustabox
Each box costs £12.99 including delivery and the value of the box contents is promised to be far greater than this, based on what you would expect to pay if you bought the items in the shops.

Once you have received your box, you are encouraged to review the products and let the brands know what you thought - whether you liked the item or not.

The December box contained, as per the previous boxes, a lovely mix of sweet and savoury treats. There is a selected list of products for each month published on the website but not everyone receives the same combination. The element of surprise adds to the fun.

Once again, there was a mixture of brands I already knew but quite a few I'd heard of but not got round to trying - which is really the point of Degustabox.

There were 10 products from January's selection and 1 from a selection which Degustabox call their "Db's Discoveries".

Degustabox's products of the month are Barilla Mediterranean Vegetables Sauce (£2.00) and Barilla Whole-Wheat Fusilli (£1.50).

Barilla Mediterranean Vegetable Sauce & Whole Wheat Fusilli
The theme of this month's box is "Healthy New Year" and these two items form a mainstay in lots of healthy tea-time suppers.  Pasta is so easy to feed to children.  Even Ieuan eats it!  Whole wheat is much better for us than white too, with one serving giving you 20% of your daily fibre needs.

Hip Pops Soya & Potato Snacks (£1.00 x 2)

Healthier than fried or baked snacks, these contain 50% less fat than standard potato crisps. They come in 6 flavours, 4 of which are gluten free.  The product contains less than 11% fat and is low in saturates.  I received the Barbecue and the Salt & Vinegar flavours. Hip Pops contain around 99 calories per 25g serving.

This is a unique alternative to cow's milk as it's made with freshly pressed coconut milk.  It contains fewer calories than skimmed milk, has 0% cholesterol and is 100% allergen free.  It tastes remarkably like cow's milk on breakfast cereals and doesn't curdle in your tea or coffee.

Crabbies Light (£1.49) & Red Square Toffee Mini Vodka (£1.99)

Crabbies Alcoholic Light Ginger Beer & Red Square Toffee Mini Vodka - Degustabox review - motherdistracted.co.uk
Crabbies Alcoholic Light Ginger Beer & Red Square Toffee Mini Vodka
Now I'm not entirely sure these two can be classed as 'healthy', especially given the new alcohol guidelines which cheerful state that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.  But, on the basis that a little of what you fancy must still surely do you some good, I'm prepare to suspend any disbelief.

Crabbies Alcoholic Light Ginger Beer has half the ginger of the original for a lighter taste and 2.8% vol per 330ml of the beverage.

Red Square Toffee Vodka is made with 7 times distilled and 100% pure vodka and Degustabox have helpfully given a recipe for a pick-me-up cocktail on the reverse of their information leaflet.  To make a "Crabbie's Toffee Mule", simply combine 25ml of Red Square Toffee with 330ml of Crabbies and add some ice.  Simples.

Complete Energy (£1.99), Drink Me Chai (free gift) & Happy Monkey Smoothies (£1.00)

Complete Energy, Drink Me Chai & Happy Monkey Smoothie - Degustabox review - motherdistracted.co.uk
Complete Energy, Drink Me Chai & Happy Monkey Smoothie
Complete Energy Bites (£1.99)

These are low calorie chocolates infused with caffeine.  In fact, 1 bite is the equivalent of a large premium coffee.  They provide an instant energy boost to help improve your alertness, endurance and physical energy.  The Husband has tried them as an energy boost on an early morning sprint from Cardiff to London and says they certainly do the trick.  Just be careful not to take too many - it is caffeine after all, and there's an advisory note on the box.

Happy Monkey Smoothies (£1.00) - DB Discovery

These smoothies have no added bits and give children 1 of their 5-a-day.  They come in 3 flavours, Strawberry & Banana, Orange & Mango and Apple & Blackcurrant.  They are made from 100% pure fruit and are free from sweeteners and preservatives.  They come in boxes of four and are ideal for lunchboxes.

Drink Me Chai (free gift)

Chai seems to be growing in popularity but I must confess I'm not a particular fan.  This one is spiced with a hint of clove and has only 42 calories per cup.  It's available to buy in Waitrose, Sainsbury and Ocado.

The total retail value of the box is £19.94, good value given the cost of the box was £12.99. If you like the excitement of a monthly present and enjoy trying out new brands, I think Degustabox is a great scheme. I'd place it firmly in the 'treat' category but the price is low enough to make it attractive. A Degustabox subscription would also make a great gift. You can cancel at any time, as long as you give them sufficient notice to stop next month's box.

Please note, though that Degustabox can only deliver to Mainland UK and not to Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and Islands and you must be over 18 to order.

I also have a discount code for first time subscribers for a very generous £6 off your first box. Simply enter BLDEG15 at checkout.

Further information is available at the Degustabox UK website, or you can talk to them on Facebook or on Twitter.

Fruity Festive Tipples For Christmas & New Year & A Giveaway

Christmas is a time when mulled wine and hot cider brews rein supreme in the drinks department, but for those that are partial to a cold tipple during the festive season the options can often be limited and disappointing.

This year I’m teaming up with NuCasa to give away a set of vintage style Kilner handled drinking jars, so I decided to pull together some fruity festive tipple recipes the lucky winner can try out in their brand new glasses!

Cranberry Mojito

Ingredients:
3 mint leaves
1 tablespoon Cranberry Reduction
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
Ice cubes
3 tablespoons of your favourite rum
Lemon-lime soft drink
Garnish: fresh mint leaves, lime slices, cranberries

Make it:
Muddle the mint leaves, cranberry reduction, and fresh lime juice against the sides of a cocktail shaker (or a flask with a lid). Add ice cubes and the rum. Cover with lid and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled (about 30 seconds). Strain into your drinking jar glass filled with ice cubes.
Top with lemon-lime soft drink and garnish with fresh mint leaves, fresh cranberries and a slice of lime.

Blueberry & Lime Gin Gimlet

Ingredients:

6 1/2 tablespoons sugar
6 1/2 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons fresh blueberries
2 1/2 tablespoons lime juice gin (3 tablespoons per drink)

Make it:

First you’ll need to make a simple syrup. Put equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan (for this recipe 6 ½ tablespoons of each) and cook over a medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally (should take about five minutes).
Add the blueberries and cook for 10 minutes until the blueberries burst and the syrup is purple.
Add the lime juice and remove from the heat.
Let cool and strain.

In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 parts gin to 1.5 parts blueberry syrup and some ice. Shake and strain into glass. Top up with soda water or for a twist try sparkling elderflower!

Non-Alcoholic Festive Fruit Punch

Ingredients: (Makes approx. 15 servings)

2 litres cranberry juice
250ml orange juice lemon/lime cordial diluted to taste in 500ml soda water
Sugar Garnish: oranges, limes, cranberries

Make it:

Slice up the oranges and limes and throw into the bottom of a drinks dispenser or large punch bowl along with the cranberries.
Mix all the punch ingredients together and pour on top. Serve ice cold.

TIP: For an alcoholic twist add prosecco or champagne for a festive fruity fizz that’ll liven up any party!

The lovely folks at NuCasa, retailers of retro kitchen accessories and funky home decor, have got a set of their Kilner handled drinking jars to giveaway (perfect for sipping any of these festive tipples this Christmas & New Year!)

To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do is fill in the Rafflecopter widget below and follow the steps for entry. All terms and conditions are within the widget, so please make sure you read them and understand the rules.

The giveaway ends at noon on 30th December 2015.

Refresh & Rehydrate Your Kids With Robinsons

Kids do everything at 100 miles an hour and, in their haste to pursue the next shiny thing, or toy, or chance to make a mess, sometimes things like drinking enough fall by the wayside.

We know that staying hydrated is vital for our health.  In fact just a slight drop in hydration levels affects our brain and our performance.

And, for school age children, staying hydrated is even more important to give them the best chance to learn as much as possible.

So how do we encourage our kids (and the rest of our family!) to drink more?

Ideally, of course, the drink of choice would be water but, having regularly had to remove barely touched cups of water, it's good that there is another weapon in the parenting arsenal.

Robinsons Squash is a regular item on the shopping list with eleven flavours including no added sugar varieties. Caitlin's favourite is orange whilst Ieuan is an Apple & Blackcurrant fan.  They have to be different, don't they? But there's also Lemon & Mango, Orange & Raspberry and the more exotic Mango & Passion Fruit.

I drank Robinsons as a child too (yes I know that's a few years ago), although I'm afraid it never improved my tennis.

This year Robinsons have a new recipe and are encouraging us to be a little more creative with their squash to encourage us all to drink more water in a tasty, easy to prepare way.  All their squashes are now 'no added sugar' too.

So why not indulge your inner mixologist and see if you can come up with something a little more exciting than straight squash?

How about Warming Lemon & Ginger?  Robinsons Lemon with fresh lemon juice and finely grated ginger, served with warm water from the kettle?

Or, just right for Christmas, Mulled Apple & Blackcurrant? Apple & Blackcurrant squash with cloves, black peppercorns, star anise and ground allspice?  Just warm in a pan, simmer for 3 minutes and then set aside for 3 minutes to infuse.

Don't Worry - I Was Supervising!
Caitlin's new twist on her favourite orange squash was to combine it with ginger ale for a bit of sparkle and a touch more zing. Well, actually it was Robinsons' idea but I hadn't the heart to discourage her.

We used approximately 50 ml of Robinsons orange per glass and topped it up with sugar free ginger ale and sliced of orange.

The drink was really refreshing and Caitlin really enjoyed having a hand in making a drink she found a little more exciting.

You could add a few extra touches if you wanted to with coloured straws, glace cherries on sticks (I'm going back to the 70's here) or even a cocktail umbrella.  Strangely the latter seem to have vanished from supermarket shelves.  Can't think why.

We're looking forward to mixing up some more combinations - next on the list is a St. Clements with orange and sparkling lemonade and I'm looking forward to warming some lemon squash and adding some honey the next time someone has a sore throat.

Why not give some of your own blends a try?

Stay Safe This Christmas Party Season

My daughter is only 9 years old, but already she can make that sound - "harrumph" - which implies she hasn't the faintest intention of listening to me; a situation that I fully envisage will continue when she hits her teens.

Christmas revellers the worse for wear - stay safe this party season - motherdistracted.co.uk
Christmas Revellers The Worse For Wear - Mirror.co.uk
Since this is now the season when Daily Mail journalists polish their camera lenses and lurk around the many pubs in St. Mary Street in Cardiff (or any other busy city centre) on Fridays and Saturdays hoping to catch party goers in less than dignified positions (i.e. spark out on the floor, face down in the gutter, etc), I found myself wondering what advice I'd give Caitlin in the years to come on how to stay safe on a night out.

I suspect that very few of us have personal safety at the top of our agenda for a good night out. Most of us are more concerned about whether our dress looks good and we can actually walk in those heels.  But safety IS an issue, particularly at this time of year.

According to the Home Office, more than 300,000 women in England and Wales are sexually assaulted and 60,000 raped each year - a truly staggering statistic.  This means that in the month of December an average of 25,000 women will be sexually assaulted and 5,000 women raped, without allowing for any seasonal fluctuations in statistics due to the party season.

So, below are some tips it would do all of us, male and female, well to read and inwardly digest before stepping into that taxi.

Before You Go
  • Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged.
  • Carry a personal alarm with you - men as well as women - as statistics show that men actually stand a higher chance of being attacked in the street.
  • Keep some money separate from your purse or wallet.  A friend of mine shoves a £20 note down her bra!
  • If you're using public transport, find out the times of the buses / trains so you're not waiting about too long at the bus stop / station and know what time you have to leave so as not to miss the last one home altogether.
  • Make sure you have the taxi firm's number in your phone.
  • Let someone know where you are going and roughly what time you plan to be home.
  • Don't get too tipsy before you leave.  It's tempting to have a few glasses before you go to get you in the party mood (and to avoid the hefty prices some clubs charge for drinks), but you're likely to end up drunker than you might otherwise have been much quicker.
And, on the subject of drinking ...

Festive Tipples
  • Don't drink on an empty stomach - the levels of alcohol in your blood will rise quicker, which means you'll be drunk quicker.  Try to at least have a high protein snack - some cubes of cheese and some crackers, or even a bowl of cereal will be better than nothing.
  • Try to control your drinking - set yourself an upper limit and stick to it.
  • Avoid drinking in rounds - it puts you under pressure to both drink and spend more. The Government advises 3-4 units of alcohol a day for men (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and 2-3 units a day for women (equivalent to a 175ml glass of wine). And there's always someone who manages to avoid paying for a round, isn't there?!
  • Watch your, and your friends' drinks - take turns to watch each other's drinks when you go to the toilet or outside for a cigarette.  One of my girlfriends drinks bottled beers and advises keeping your thumb in the top of the bottle when you're not drinking.
At The Club / Party Venue
  • Stick with people you know - and try to go home with them.
  • Don't get drawn into problem situations or arguments  - just walk away.
  • If you still don't feel safe then call the police.
Getting Home Safely
  • Book a taxi before you go out - and make sure the taxi firm's number is on your phone. I'd have the number of two or three firms to be on the safe side. And if possible get them to identify both the model and registration number of the car which will be collecting you. The taxi firm I prefer to use here in Cardiff, Premier Cabs, will send a text to your phone with this information when your taxi arrives.
  • Make sure you have enough money for your journey - and use a reputable firm who won't take the mickey by grossly inflating the fare.  Another of my girlfriends was recently asked to pay £75 to go from the centre of Cardiff to an address on the outskirts - a journey which should have cost £15 - £20.  She had not been drinking on that particular evening and was able to tell the driver where to go! But it is obvious that there are unscrupulous drivers out there who see tipsy revellers as fair game for a financial fleecing.
  • DO NOT TAKE AN UNLICENSED MINICAB! Only licensed taxis are allowed to pull up at the kerb.  You have no idea who you might be getting into a car with.
  • Use your gut feeling - if the driver starts to ask you inappropriate questions or if it's clear you are being driven the long way round or along a route you do not recognise, ask to be dropped off at the next available bus stop / shop / anywhere open and full of people.  Better to wait for another taxi than to put yourself at risk.
  • Sit near the driver on a bus and in an occupied carriage on a train.
  • If you HAVE to walk home, try not to do so alone - and use well lit, busy streets and main roads wherever possible.
  • Take a pair of roll-up flat shoes with you - companies such as Rollasole and Tipsy Feet make roll up ballet flats which you can take in your bag so you can walk home comfortably without having to teeter in heels.  It's much easier to run in flat shoes too.
A lot of this is common sense, but it is human nature to assume that "it will never happen to me".

Avoid using the body language of a "victim" too.  Stand tall, walk swiftly and with purpose.  Look like you know where you are going. It is illegal to carry weapons of course but I like to carry my house keys in my hand.

There are also numerous apps now which allow you to use your mobile as a torch but, since mobile phone theft is so prevalent it would be better to keep your phone to hand but concealed.

Do NOT stop in the middle of an empty street to take a mobile phone call or answer a text.

With these tips in mind, you can enjoy your night out without compromising your safety.  Then all you'll have to worry about will be the photos of you dancing on tables appearing on Facebook the next morning.
