New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 31 2017

How are you all this week? It's week one of the school holiday and Caitlin has already come down with a virus and is currently in bed feeling very sorry for herself.

I think we sometimes forget how tiring a full term can be for our kids and we find the 'bugs' often tend to appear at the start of the holidays. It often takes a good few days before they are back to full health.

The weather, of course, is appalling and the forecast is for rain for much of the holiday.  Staying inside with a book might be something we all end up doing!

If it all gets too much, we'll just have to don our kagools and brave the rain or perhaps the cinema.  If you haven't seen Despicable Me 3 we can heartily recommend it.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 30 2017

How are you all this week? It's the end of term today so we're bracing ourselves for six weeks of chaos.  And, of course, it's tipping down with rain!  This is probably our fault for buying a new garden umbrella.  Have you noticed that everytime you buy something new for the garden the weather changes?

We're in the middle of home renovations too so the house is in chaos.  We've had to move our bookshelves and it was quite an eye-opener, I can tell you, to discover exactly how many books we've been squirrelling away.

You can never have too many though, can you?  And talking of books, have you caught my recent review of the latest Ivy Nash thriller, Break In, by the irrepressible John W. Mefford?  I honestly don't know how he manages to come up with such engaging and exciting plots every time.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 29 2017

How are you all this week? It's hot and muggy and there's still one week to go till the end of term. Not that I'm counting, you understand, it's just that a desperate need to fill 6 weeks with activities has just come over me.

Because, otherwise, it will be wall to wall iPad with my two, interspersed with Xbox and Horrid Henry repeats on the TV.  Not good.

I'm thinking of enforcing a reading hour to share some of the fabulous children's classics I used to enjoy - The Hobbit, Wind in The Willows, Milly Molly Mandy, What Katy Did - I'm sure you have your own favourites.

Times have changed so much though, haven't they?  It will be interesting to see if these stories can hold the imagination of kids far more sophisticated than I was at their age.

Of course the extra benefit is if they are quietly reading, I can catch up with the mountain of books piling up around the arm chair that doubles as my 'office'.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 28 2017

How are you all this week? It's still all go in the run down to the end of term.

Ieuan has had his latest Tae Kwon-do grading (blue stripe) and Caitlin has had her RAD Grade 3 ballet exam.  Plus there seem to be loads of birthday parties to attend. The Husband and I are envying the kids their social life!

I did manage to get out on Sunday to see Despicable Me 3 at our local Odeon and it is hilarious. The Minions are on top form, as is Gru's twin brother.

That apart I'm sharpening my skills at my latest hobby, Matched Betting, which is something I never thought I'd try - but it's true, you can make a risk-free profit at it. Certainly enough to buy a fair few new books.

How are you all this week? Well, sports day is out of the way and the next parents' evening is on the horizon as we wind down to the end of term.

This year seems to have flown by!  I'm now turning my attention to planning things to do to stave off the inevitable boredom which hits by about day 2!  I'm thinking of setting up a reading hour each day for the kids to make sure screen time is limited.

How are you all this week? I have to confess it's been far too hot for me and we've all struggled to sleep.  It's been particularly hard to get the kids to sleep.  Ieuan keeps asking me to turn the heating off!

I haven't really felt like cooking either and we've been relying on quick and easy summer salads. You'll find some great recipes from my blogger friends in this post.

And if you've a pet pooch, I've some useful advice on how to keep your pets cool in a heatwave too.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 25 2017

How are you all this week? I hope you are all enjoying beautiful weather and are cleaning up your barbecues in time for some serious lounging about in the sunshine.

For us parents (and grandparents!), the long Summer school holiday is in sight (21 July) so I really need to start planning lots of useful activities to stop the boredom setting in for my two.

I'm still trying to encourage Caitlin and Ieuan to read more.  Caitlin is a good reader but Ieuan would rather play Minecraft.  I've just got Caitlin a starter set of The Nancy Drew Mysteries  by Carolyn Keen which I loved as a girl.  We tried Agatha Christie's Poirot short stories but they are still a little too complex for her.

My latest review is of A Flair For Drama, a Sadie Kramer mystery by Deborah Garner and it's a great cozy mystery which even includes a recipe for chocolate cake.  You can read my review here.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 20 2017

How are you all this week?  Oh happy day, the kids' tests are over (at least in Wales) so they can relax a bit and concentrate on Caitlin's least favourite day of the whole year - sports day.  I used to hate it too but obviously I have to pretend it's all jolly good fun and character building.

We're off to Devon in a couple of weeks so I'm bracing myself for the packing and bulk buying of toiletries and medication (despite the fact we're only going for a week).

Just in case the weather is, how shall I put it, typically British, we'll be taking loads of books to read and I will trying to prize the kids sticky fingers off their iPads so they can do some reading too.

If you are looking for a great new book, I have just reviewed In Doubt by the incomparable John W. Mefford. This is an Ivy Nash thriller, a new detective for me and in this one, Ivy must protect a little girl from a wealthy egomaniac hell-bent on revenge. You can read my review here.

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 19 2017

How are you all this week?  It's been a strange old week with Monday off for a bank holiday and Thursday off for polling and an inset day.  We don't know where we are.  Plus it's been National Test Week for kids here in Wales so my two have had their maths test on Wednesday and have English today.  Brings back memories of mocks and O/A levels, doesn't it?

The weather is equally confused. One minute here in Cardiff we've had brilliant sunshine and the next it has been blowing a gale!

New Releases, Free & Bargain Books Link-up Week 17 2017

How are you all this week?  The Easter school holidays are drawing to a close here in Wales and we've just returned from a fabulous short break courtesy of Butlins.  The weather was typically British but so was the fun!

I hope you had a great Easter and enjoyed your fill in chocolate.  It's back to 'healthy' eating in the Hobbis Household which means the Husband is going to have to back away from the Monster Munch and I am going to put my new running shoes on. Heck, I may even leave the house in them.

I've just read a great thriller by Carolyn Arnold - Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI Series) with a serial killer whose actions are beyond grisly.  It's a real page turner and I'm looking forward to reviewing In Doubt by the incomparable John W.
